Why?

Why are fish like pompano, tarpon, redfish, permit, and snook not allowed to be taken by spearfishermen when they may be taken by hook and liners. I feel discriminated against! Whats behind these regulations?

Yeah, I always wondered that too. It makes absolutly no sense what-so-ever! A dead fish is a dead fish whether it is speared or hooked, either way it will be eaten!

Yea.... a big old African Pompano or Tarpon would be a hell of a fight! LOL.... but heck, if you can shoot tuna, why not right?

Most other parts of the world allow billfish to be speared, and we in the states cant even shoot a snook or pompano. Something aint right!

That is a fight that will be fought one day I hope, but it would be against the guides and captains that are part of the recreational sector. Right now we need a united front against the commercial longliners (not all commercials). Of course it isn't fair that a more selective gear type is discriminated against, but they will fight tooth and nail against allowing us to take dollars out of their pocket (how they will percieve it) and endanger their livelihood. Dare I say CCA would even be against us, I'll save that fight for way after we are allowed 25% of the red grouper quota and/or longlines/bottom trawling are a thing of the past in the gulf.
It is also bogus that we we can't spear (harvest accomplished by piercing the flesh a fish while swimming, even with a dive knife) fish anywhere a person can hook and line....jetties and within 100 yds of shore (think gigging flounder with a pole spear while snorkeling).
