Anyone out there hunting with a Wong? Actually, I'd like to hear about people's set ups. Especially anyone spearing big stripers.

I've been using a Wong Nor-easter Hybrid (42") for the last 2 seasons. Really happy with it. Accurate and plenty enough power. I'd like to get a longer (50 or 55") hybrid that would accept a third band specifically for big bass, good vis, and/or trips down south. You also won't find two nicer or responsive guys to deal with (Daryl and Rick).
Nothing fancy with my set up other than I often have the shooting line directly to the float. Just a personal preference.

To bad BillMac is suspended he could really insert some wisdom here. I am sure that Chad Carney will give you his opinion regarding Wongs, he is a distributer and user so his word is good.

nice fish J!
I was able to hunt a wong over the summer. (50" model) It was equiped with the Riffe reel and I found the reel to throw the balance off a little. I think hunting the gun as is or break away would be the way to go.

I have a Wong Ono. I know it's not the same application, but I love it and highly recommend it. Daryl is focused on customer service as well as his craftsmanship. Feel free to call him and he'll happily talk story about the best setup for you. 808-373-9138

I have the 60" Hybrid Carbon Fiber gun and I love it. It is now my primary gun and has been since I got it. I like having the option of using the third band when I am going for big fish.

55" GR gun and love it. The third band makes it insanely powerful and long reaching.

I got a chance to a use a 55 hybrid for two weeks in Hawaii this fall and I was blown away. The power and accuracy were so impressive and it was easy to swim with for a gun that size. I am already saving to put in an order.

50" Rear-Handle Plus Reef Gun with an Omer 50 reel (2 Rubbers). I like it. It has suprised me a couple of times with the amount of range and punch it has. A beautiful gun and Daryl was a real pleasure to work with. He helped me narrow it down to a gun that would work best for me. You can't beat the quality service. :thumps:

Had a 55" hybrid carbon, but found it slightly too tip heavy with the reel, so shifted to a 55" hybrid carbon Magnum with the enclosed track, that has more wood and ballast and am fully in love with it, 2 bands and 9/32 shaft for the reef and 3 bands with 5/16 shaft for heavier use, great balance and manoeuverability. Can't wait for the next one, but still have to make my mind up on what I "really ;-))" need as I am thinking to bring one to Italy for some light blue water hunting and for future travel purpose.....
H aving to deal with Wong and Aimrite is a pleasure as Daryl and Rick are allways full of wisdom and kindness.

I use Riffe reels on larger guns, but I would imagine they would be too heavy for the 50" hybrid. However, a friend has the 50" hybrid with the Omer 50 reel mounted sideways by Daryl, and he loves it. It came with two 5/8" bands but he put on a third one. I would think that would be too much for such a small gun, but he says it dead accurate. It makes a nice compromise because its short enough for poor vis but has enough power to have some range and penetrate decent size fish, as shown below in photos of Jeff's fish and gun.
Of course I have not been diving in New England, so maybe that 42 incher shown in a previous post would be better. After all, it must be called the NorEaster for a good reason. My main purpose in this post was to say that the 50" handles that Omer 50 reel just fine.

Don't know what size bass you're looking for. This is the biggest bass taken from NH with a 50" hybrid. The muzzle holds three "Weenie" bands and provided enough power to go completely through the fish at about 12 feet.
The gun is a bit unweildy in the crappy RI vis, Usually use the "Northeaster" there and that has plenty of power well.

Beautiful fish Chauggie. How much did it weigh?
I sure would like to get a crack at those some day. Of course we have the import versions out here in Nor Cal and a few are even seen down here, but we aren't allowed to shoot them.

Bill,
I've been informed the fish was shot at 15 feet and swimming away. Daryl and Rick are great to work with.

Those are beautiful fish! I've only seen them in springs.
Daryl's guns sure are versatile.
I use a 50" FL Free Shafter for most of my west coast freediving, but move up to the 55" FL FS when it's really clear. Most of the year the 55" FL FS is on scuba multiple freeshaft duty.
Also looking forward to using the Magnum Hybrid on the rigs next year.

Hey Bills Back! Merry Christmas Bill.
Daryl has to be one of the nicest guys I know. He'll do just about anything to satisfy a customer.
I commonly shot fish 16 ft out with my 50" closed track gun. In fact, sometimes I wait till the fish is right at the limit of my shot before I pull the trigger. I love reaching out and touching them from Long distance! :thumps:
Now Rick , my brother he's a PITA at times but that is what baby brothers do! ;)

John,
Just how the hell do you know that it's 16 feet? I frequently get asked what the ranges of my guns are, and I really don't know what to say in answer. If I'm lucky, I think I know what it looks like when a fish is in range, but the buggers have never held still while I run a tape out to them, so I'm not sure exactly how many feet that is.
Did you get this data in a pool shooting at targets?
Spearo_Fla

It an estimate Bill- I figure 4 ft in front of me is the gun the shaft is 5 feet I use a double wrap, thats a total of 25ft~. When I shoot 16 ft . I usually line the fish. So I minus the shaft and since I'm not at the end of my line or reel line I subtract another 4 feet of line. That puts it around 16ft~ this is with my 50" closed track Wong gun, with 2 bands.
I have shot many times just sitting on the bottom. With a 9/32 shaft and two 22" bands on my 50" closed track gun after 16-18 ft the shaft starts to drop off. So by the time the shaft is near its end of line travel it is already dropping off target.

I just got a 55" carbon fiber hybrid about a month ago. It's got an Omer reel on it and a butt-load of spectra to boot. This gun is extremely powerful, especially with the third band in use. I absolutely love this gun. I went on a trip right after I got it and quite a few spearos came up to me and wanted to look at it. All were mesmerized!
Daryl was really helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Come to think of it, I have pulled the trigger on this gun 4 times, and I have caight 4 fish. I guess I'm batting 1000 so far! JIM

I got an Ono in anticipation of hunting tuna. I plan on 'practicing' with stripers and Daryl suggested just usiing 3 bands. It is a beautifle gun and the range beats anything I've used before, in fact it doubles! I envision a hybrid coming into the picture next year.

I envy you guys who have a need for an Ono, but meanwhile, I can't say enough about the hybrids.
