Does anyone know the spearfishing laws in St. Maarten? We just bought a place down there and would love to know more about where we can go.

i am in love with that Island, spent a month every summer for 4 years in Grand case.....
The spearfishing laws should be the same as in france, but no one ever aked or told me I should have a fishing license.... I used to go fishing for small snappers, groupers and open water fishes like wahoo, kingfish and what else.... never had a shark encounter. I am talking about small fishes because there is a lot of ciguatera around.....Lobsters don't have it so feel free to catch them. I found useful to have a polespear with be for bugs I could not catch by hand ;-)) .
Where in the island have you bought the house? We are thinking about going back a fifth time and, perhaps, look for something. I'd love to know some details, you can PM me if you wish.

I'm pretty sure you can't spear on the Dutch side, however the French side is a different story.

what about Saba or St. Nevice, they are the sister Dutch islands, can you spearfish around them?

Nope, no spearing on any of the dutch islands. Trust me! Stiff fine. I know some people whom have gotten caught on Curaçao, and it wasn't pretty. Nevis isn't Dutch by the way, so I don't know about that. Statia, Saba, Dutch part of St. Maarten Bonaire and Curaçao are of limits. I think you might have more luck around the French & British Islands...
Good luck.

what is the matter with the Ducth???? I thought they were very liberal people. They can smoke grass and other good stuff but they can't do a little spearing :)
