View Full Version : Welcome Lurkers!

Welcome Lurkers! Tonight there were on SpearBoard 105 people (29 members and 76 guests). That is a ratio of almost 3 to 1 and is typical of just about every day on this website. I encourage guests (who we affectionately call "Lurkers") to go ahead and get in the water and sign up as a member. It costs you nothing and enables you to post comments or questions, to start new threads, and to participate fully in the forum. Sometimes you might see verbal bruising and heated discussion. Sometimes you might see intelligent suggestions that improve the craft of the sport of spearfishing. Sometimes you might see off-the-wall bizarre behavior or questionable humor. But, let me tell you this: All of that is a magical chemistry that makes SpearBoard one of the most exciting and active places in cyberspace for spearfishing. The bottom line is that SpearBoard participation is great fun! So keep lurking if you really want to, but do consider signing up. Once you take the plunge and join SpearBoard, you won't regret it. :thumps:

I think the best solution to help register more users is make the all about guns forum and the off topic forum private. In addition, ban the mention of Rep/Dem Clinton/Bush Scuba/Free Florida/CA and whatever else I forgot. We will ease the lurkers on to the board before they realize what lunatics we really are.

Was also thinking that the 3:1 ratio is significant in another way as well. It is just about the ratio of wiseass commentary to sound advice!!!!!

I think the off topic areas and the random topics are good. Those were the only posts that I felt comfortable posting to. Without them it would be even more intimidating.
Welcome lurkers. I definately spent my time lurking, but am very glad that I signed up. Skill has nothing to do with if you should be a member. I signed up because I had a question that hadn't been asked before (at least that I could find).

You can only write/read about spearfishing alone for so much time before every topic is covered and you get bored of it. The off topics and commentary are why the membership is so high. It's entertainment and educational a lot of the time, generally more stimulating than the mind numbing drivel on TV. This is good being that a bigger audience is present to see the issues revolving around the sport we love...and that gives us an opportunity to act on them before it's too late.

Someone who is too put off by all the BS banter in the areas of the board not directly related to spearfishing is probably a real hoot to hang out with anyway  If not for spearboard, unfortunately I would probably know the names of everyone on American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and god knows what else my wife finds to be mentally stimulating on the low channels of the tube:D

Nothing brings out the lurkers like a speargun giveaway. When Iya had his speargun giveaway contest years ago it got a bunch of lurkers to sign up.
Are you considered a Lurker if you are actually a member but typically don't sign on just to see what's happening every day?

JimB, I guess that situation might be called a "Quasi-Lurker." They have been in the water and found it too hot or too cold to stay in and post. LOL That's cool. But, now I wonder how many of you lurkers are true lurkers? Why don't those of you Lurkers out there sign in and let us know if you are a True Lurker or a Quasi-Lurker? :thumps:

I wonder if Lurkers are also good at stalking fish? If so, do they shoot them or just watch from a reasonable distance until someone else shoots them?
One time, I was lurking aroud this chick's window and then her dad came out, but I told him I was only a Lurker, totally not committed to anything but lurking, but his shotgun didn't buy it. Damn you Dick Cheney!

Welcome Robbie, It takes alot of courage to come out of the Lurkers Closet. Spearboard is a wild and woolly place in cyberspace, but you Aussies know how to handle the Outback, so this should be a cakewalk. I had lunch this week with a fine Aussie visiting the USA from the Shark Shield company that is based Down Under. I think they will be donating to the Spearboard Open prize table. :thumps: All the best on the board! Tony

Gutshot,
Thanks, I have dove tanks on the rigs in past years, but we'll freedive for snaps and sheepheads occasionaly. Truthfully I'd do it more if someone dove with me on a regular basis, but for the past few years been stuck on mainly hook and line. Anyhow I'm all about hooking up for some barleypops and getting back into spearing.

She has seen the fish pix on your posts and is encouraging me to take her fishing again, and to events to meet others.

I have to say to all lurkers, Spearboard is not only a wealth of knowledge for the sport of spearing fish but a huge bank of good people most of which will reach out to newbies and take them under their wing. you give respect and you will get the same in return. I have been on here awhile now and have to say there are so many good people on here that have helped me in many aspects of diving and spearing and I have met so many nice people that have had me along on their boats for awesome trips that simply would not have happened if not for this place. Why wait to sign up it costs nothing and they do not send you any email.

I have just joined spearboard after meeting Andy last night. I want to thank him for his presentation, which was very well done and obviously the result of much preparation. I was very sorry that there was not enough time to view the video, which my wife, Linda, and I were sitting there hoping to see.
Thanks again, Jimmy Thomas

I am glad you enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy your spearboard experience. there are many on here that will answer your questions you might have. just remember not to take any comments too personal on here we all like to have some fun at times and sometimes it is hard to judge the tone of any comments some might make. feel free to send me and personal messages if you like to. I am sure we will be covering spearing again either in that club or we might have to get our own club and run it like we want.

Advice to those who register: Pick a name that sounds aquatic.
I actually registered twice, as the first name i registered with (ayergo) was never activated by an administrator. If it could be deleted i would appreciate it.

Enough lookin', time to say hello.. Same post I just put in the General area.. Nice website. After taking our 14 year old son to get certified in scuba this summer in Key West, I have become enamored with all things undersea. Oh and that's our son Eric and pit bull Lucy in the picture.
Live in New Mexico, half the time in the mountains the last 25 years and spent much of the first half of life in and around water. My son and I made 8 dives on the barrier reef off Key West last summer and look forward to going back around spring or summer again. We were fortunate to have an up close encounter with one large hammerhead and 10 other smaller sharks, some rays etc. For my son it was especially great since it was his first time undersea with all the fascination of youth. Let alone all the great food in Key West and the change of climate from the high country we live in. Anyone ever have that fresh coconut bread at Kelly's? WoW..
Stumbled upon Marlin Stepaneks free dive website. It’s like some kind of hypnotism has over me. Lots of dreaming about undersea adventure especially after seeing your website. Hopefully I’ll see more of the underwater world off Florida once again soon. Had a great experience in the 70’s while sailing around Florida on a boat I worked on out of Tampa. Fondly remember rounding Key West one late afternoon in early June 1978 lounging on the bow watching a lone spotted dolphin and seeing the shadow of the boat run across the bottom in very clear water. Then suddenly running back to the depth sounder after seeing the reef in what looked like 10 feet of water, it registered 85 feet. Whoa! Was the water that much clearer in 1978? We stopped over a flat area and did some free diving in 65 feet of water and were able to come up with a handful of sand. It was very cool at the time; I was a kid from Wisconsin 21 years old and full of energy. As fate had it that summer we broke our rudder just south of Miami.
We anchored somewhere north of what was stilt city and I had another very cool free dive, simply going down the anchor rode to the bottom that was still fairly clear and full of life. I’m sure that’s changed by now. But still it was like I’d died and gone to heaven. Later that day we limped into Miami marina and had to stay a few days getting the rudder fixed with some stainless steel plates and a welder bought from Sears loaded into a local taxi. None of us really knew a whole lot about welding. It worked! The dock experience in Miami Marina was a very cool memory of an eclectic crowd. DEA Confiscated cigarette boats, racing sailboats with mostly female crews that made it hard to concentrate and some just re-finished workboats that had way more money than regular work allows?? The last night there we were walking around the area and stumbled upon the band Little Feat playing in an old local theater. What a night that was. What a place back then! 51 now and wondering how to spend more time below the sea and in Florida. That was one great summer thanks to a great man in Tampa St Pete that paid us to take a replica Spanish Galleon up the east coast and into the Great Lakes stopping a lot along the way.
Ah but the Reef off Key West was still beautiful this last summer. I’m glad my son got to see it. Thanks for this website! I like the mountains and the desert out here but you all got it good down there! My son and I do a lot of back packing here in New Mexico, there’s a lot less people and many wilderness areas to explore, yet somehow the oceans are calling me again. Looking forward to learning more here on this great website.
Thanks,
:cowboy:

Hello all!! i am the picture of a lurker...signed up a while ago but never really posted much. i have been consulting the infinite wisdom of the members here for a good long time. so i have decided that i should become a more active member...my status quo...
recently acquired a 16ft carolina skiff, little under powered with the 9.9 on her but she gets two of us out there with a little patience. my home is the inlet on the south end of wrightsville beach, NC. we shoot (atlantic)sheepshead tog and flounder out there on a reg basis with cobia (which have eluded me as of yet) in the spring and black drum and trout in the fall. i get off occasionally to some ledges/wrecks to shoot some grouper, hogsnapper, and hopefully some palegics, (mahi, wahoo)...anyone in the SNC region looking for gas splitters, i know few guys and myself for scuba or freedive. i have been using a 36in teak biller for low vis jetty hunting and a 60in mahogany for deeper better vis situations, however ive just ordered a gun from julio at garciasub spearguns in PR (check him out, will post more when i try my new baby out) that will shoot a 60shaft with a reel that i am hoping to freedive with little more and still use while "cheating" keeping tabs on the reel of course. currently working on breath holding, can hold for 2min 15 secs sitting at my desk but mor like 1.30 while on the bottom of the university pool. whop knows when im looking at fish, the mnmore i see the less i pay attention to my breath!! anyways, been spearing actively for 3 years here in NC, started when i was 13 back in NJ(manasquan inlet). looking forward to becoming an active member fo the community and forging some relationships.

I've been reading for some months now and learning a lot. Thanks Tony for letting me in, I've got a ton of questions, probably stupid ones. I grew up in Santa Monica, on Sorrento beach. I moved to cabo san lucas 14 years ago. I've been spearing for about six years and have had to learn everything by trail and error. A friend of mine turned me on to this website and now I read it everyday. A wealth of usefull information. All my diving is done from the beach. The fish I like to go after are cabrilla, amberjack, pargo, and snook. When they're not around there are plenty of other fish that just surprisingly show up. It's absolutely amazing that at the right time of the year some of those big fish can be speared sometimes no more the twenty yards from shore. I usually surf but find myself praying for the surf to go down so I can go spear something. Thanks again for letting me in, I feel honored because I know there are some dedicated divers on this website that have paid their dues. However, I'm not too happy with the lurker label, but I'm still happy I can finally post. Now where's that bikini thread?

I learned about Spear Board from a buddy of mine who turned me on to diving and spearfishing back in 1993. I had not been diving in about 8 years and he threw a set of gear together and we hit the water 6 weeks ago 25 miles out of Clearwater. OMG did I get the inner urge for diving again. The week before the SPO i went out and bought a new set of gear and had a blast in the tourney. We went to the south end of the middle grounds and shot some nice fish. After not spearing for along time I did very well and only missed a couple of fish I shot at. I am so glad I am in the water again and did not realize how much i really missed spear fishing. I like this site from what I have seen and hope to meet some new friends and learn some new things.

Hey all!
I've been diving for a couple of decades but am new to spearing. I was referred here from scubaboard and lurked for a short while. I'm looking to learn the ropes so that I can show my son and we can go together and I can safely supervise him spearing. I plan on tagging along with buddies who spear as soon as I learn a bit more and was wondering if there's a sticky or something for newbs as an intro. I searched the threads but nothing specific came up, just many requests similar to mine, with lots of replies. I learned a lot, but thought maybe there is a central thread out there.
My son and I love to fish, camp, hunt, etc. Let me qualify that - he LIVES to fish. He's 11 yrs. and is wanting to get Jr. OW certified. I showed him some pics of snapper and grouper right close up on a trip in the Gulf. My son saw prey and asked me to help him start spearing. I told him as soon as he got certified and a few dives, I'd let him try it. I've got an old speargun I bought with some used boat gear that I'm refitting (it's not the best, but it'll do on a budget). I'm not sure about stringers, legality of baiting, how you tow your catch without it becoming chum, what beaches are legal for entry with speargun, etc.
I'm pretty safety conscious, but I solo dive frequently and mod my gear to suit my needs when called for - and take responsibility for it. But when it comes to my children, safety is a top priority so I'm learning as much as I can before hitting the water. Any help or pointers to references or resources is appreciated.
Look forward to meeting some of you out there before too long!
Steve

Hello all and thanks to the Big Kahuna for fixing my menership, much appreciated!
A little about me, been diving since I was 10 so that means 36 years of bottom time for me! Looking to move to the Keys in the next few years, yes, the wife and I went there and got "The Keys Disease", lol! Fell in love with them the first time we went there, I was out of the service for 3 years at the time . I'm in the process of getting some pics uploaded of my speargun and looking forward to getting back into the sport after a LOOONG hiatus.:thumps:

Please allow me to introduce myself.
I thought I’d introduce myself as I will be asking quite a few questions in the next few weeks and so I thought I’d let you know who this annoying person was before hand.
I am the Chef/Owner of a seasonal restaurant on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, MN. And being as it is a seasonal restaurant my family and I spend a good part of the winter in Mexico. Last year we spent ten weeks in the Yucatan in the small fishing village of Punta Allen…marvelous place! With only four days left in our stay I was invited to go spearfishing, so with barrowed gear and NO experience I went out to the “Great Mayan” Reef. Two hours and three mahogany snapper and two reef jacks later and I became a spearfishing junkie!
We are returning to Mexico (with a three week side trip to Belize) this December through April and In the months ahead I may be bugging you all as to what gear a motivated and dedicated rookie should be taking with him. Also if any of you have fished Mexico, advice and locations would be greatly appreciated.
In return…I have been an executive chef for fifteen years and have worked in Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, San Francisco and Seattle. So if you need a recipe I may well have it.
Regards

OK, I'll bite. Im a spearing newb. I'm a lifelong boater/hunter/fisherman, and have been diving for the past 9 years. Im from Ohio and the diving here blows, I spend about a month in the Keys each winter and even diving down there is starting to get boring so I started thinking..boating..diving..fishing..shooting stuff..EUREAKA!! Spearfishing!! Ive been scouring a few different forums for the past few months. Im in the process of setting up my new gun, 54" Biller with some goodies from Spearfishing Specialties and making some final rigging changes to my boat before I head down in roughly a month. So if you see me post some somewhat stupid questions between now and then, take it easy on a new guy. :D

welcome aboard!! Sometimes you just have to take it on the chin, some of these guys can get pretty rough but all in good fun. glad to see you made the transition to spearing, you won't regret it. if you travel all the way to the keys, you are going by a lot of good hunting. florida has great spearing on all fronts with some of the best out in the panhandle. If you ever get on the west coast, around the Cedar Key area, get in touch and I'll get you on some good spots.

Yeah, I am a lurker, so much so that I lost my confirmation e-mail and even though I could log-in, I couldn't post anything. I had to e-mail SpearMax to get my account set-up properly!
I introduced myself in the FL East Coast forum, but I'll do it again here. Name's Brian, I live in Jacksonville, FL, been diving for about ten years, but just recently started spearing and I love it. I am a Captain and Diver for Sea Tow Jacksonville, and also a motorcycle riding instructor. I used to live in the Keys and I ran the largest recreational diving operation in the world for a while. I actually got into spearfishing because I bought a gun for a friend of mine as a thank you, and got myself one at the same time so we could dive together.
Thanks for the help SpearMax, and so far I'm a big fan of the board.

Hi Spearboard,
It took about 1 month after registering to get my account activated.
Like kwspearfishing7 I tried to register from different e-mail accounts but that didn't help, I guess I just needed to be patient! Finally now I can reply to these nice deals on the Marketplace and post some noob questions!
Glad to meet you all!

What's up everybody!
Just got my account activated so I thought I would say a little something about myself. My name is Trevor and I have been in the water most of my life. My dad was a surfer so I pretty much grew up at the beach. Been surfing now for about 26 of my 34 years. I currently live in Oxnard, CA at Silver Strand Beach. I used to get to dive on vacation with my parents in places like Tahiti, Turks & Caicos and Cancun but haven't done that in a long time. I have done some scuba but always seemed to prefer freediving. Love the simplicity of it! Lately I decided to dust of the old mask and start diving in some of the kelp beds to the south around the Ventura/LA county line areas. I picked up a really nice polespear from someone on Craigs list for a hell of a deal. Wanted a gun but decided to start out simple. Learn the basics and go from there. I haven't really speared anything good yet but I'm having a great time trying! I'm usually out solo (Ya Ya I know!) but can't seem to get any of my friends past the surfline. So if anyone doesn't mind a noob tagging along, hit me up...:thumps:

Aloha,
Ive been lurking on hear since 2005 but never like post anything of my own. I figured its about time to at least introduce my self. Im Daniel Mauhili, I live in Carlsbad, Ca. Spend most of the time in the water surfing or chasing dinner at Tamarack beach in Carlsbad. I have always enjoyed the ocean, surfing and spearfishing have been my favoite hobbies for along time, this summer has finnaly given me an opportunity to get out there and shot some pelagics. And thanks to Cpt Leo I did get my first. Scuba Certified in 1991 and since 2003 have been mostly Freediving, Scuba mostly now just for lobsters. I usually dive alone, so if you see a short fat Hawaiian coming out of the water at Tamarac, and its close to dinner time? its probly me.
Aloha Daniel.

Hello All, Dunno if I ever introduced myself. My name is Chris, I live in Okinawa, Japan. Been here since 1985, love it here, plan on dying here, hopefully a LONG time from now. I've been polespearin since I was a lil kid, shot my first octopus at age 10 and was hooked. My step-father used to take me out all the time while growing up, we were going out just about every night. I used to come to school with octopus hickeys all over my arms, other kids would ask what they were and I was always proud to tell them. I felt lucky to have such a cool step father. He used a big three banded wood gun and he bought me a small 1 band (Dacor, i think) gun. I couldn't hit shit with it, so I switched back to the pole spear and taco hook. Now I'm 35 years old and my step father has a small Quiksilver boat that we use to hit up the outer reef for Sazae, and spearin fish. It's been about a year since I've gone out with my step father, he's been more into fishing than spearin lately, so I go out with friends at night. We get alot of lobsters, parrots, Oji's, groupers, tako, cuttlefish, etc etc.. But since moving to night shift at work, I've been going out during the day and the pole spear just doesn't have the range of a big gun, so I recently bought two guns (Thanks to "Don-in-Japan" for telling me about them). Now I'm looking forward to using them. Hopefully I'll have some worthy pics to post up here soon. I've learned quite a bit since I first started lurking here a few months ago. Nice to meet you all. :D
