I got out yesterday and got a few. The omilu is ulua-sized, so that gives you an idea of how big the puhi (eel) that bit it must have been!

story?????

We finally got in some buoy action. The weather here has pretty
much sucked all year, so you have to take it when you can get it.

There was nothing at DD buoy, but Q buoy was on. I had a chance at
some 10# ahi at Q, but blew it. I did bag a mahi, although I should
have had one more. In my defense, I did have a little extra stuff to
deal with in the water. Since it was only me and my dad, we both
jumped in and I got to tow our boat behind me on our drift dives past
the buoy. My legs are sore today! Some fishermen pulled up and
looked at us like we were nuts. I suppose jumping out of your boat
and towing it behind you when you are 22 miles out of the the harbor
and in 6,000 feet of water is not "normal."

The swell was macking (Jaws had waves), but I thought that I could
swing it at the inshore ulua spot. I jumped in, and it was happening!
There were balls of mamu, opelu, opelu kala, and lai everywhere, and
the water was full of big pieces of plankton and crap from the
rainstorm. It was just wild! Add in the huge amounts of water
surging over the 35 foot deep high spot, and it was really wild.
About 20 feeding awa popped into view in the dirty water and I got
one. I boated it and then got lucky and found the ulua hole.

I braced against the surge and tagged an omilu as he spooked out.
When I went back to get him, a huge surge swept me under the ledge,
pinning me in there. I was finally able to get out, fully expecting
my chin to be cut open since I cracked the rocks so damn hard. As it
was, I got away with only scrapes and bruises, but my whole body is
fricking stiff today. There was no way that I was going to risk
trying to untangle the omilu after that, so I broke out the knife, cut
the mono and reel line, and limped back to the boat. At least I got
the fish and saved my spear. All I lost was my mono and some reel
line. When it's calm, I'll go back and pick up my trash.

Oh yeah, the omilu was ulua-sized and look at how big the eel bite on
its back is! You can tell it was an eel by the angle of the slashes.

Give him some of your mojo, Brandon. I would really like to see him get a fish this time. :)

Man, I hate eels!

I'm not particularly fond of them either.

But then again, we didn't get off to the best start. This is from when I was 8 years old.
