Me and my spearing buddy are going to try and spear some Pike this summer and was wondering if anyone here has done it before? What are they like to approach and such. I am also heading to Cabo San Lucas in mid June and hope to try and spear a bit there. From what I have read it is kinda a sketchy subject down there so well see what happens.

Cheers,
Justin

If pike are anything like cudas, they'll just look at ya like a slackjawed mouth breather while ya drive the shaft through their skull.

Good luck and tell us how ya do

Where I mostly dive Pike are quite rare. This one was very skittish and barely within 15 feet. I suspect if you encounter them in more usual haunts - still water and weed beds - they are not too difficult to approach

You have to see it as soon as possible. Once it moves, it almost always disappears, and don't get back. Some will move slowly, like cudas, but most stand motionless, and starts like a drag car once you get close.

Weed beds are the best spot to find'em.

It depends on the lake, time of year, time of day, etc etc. Mostly you can get close enough to get a decent shot. Some like to stay just out of reach, and like most fish- if you move directly at them they will bolt. The skittish ones are easier to approach if you swim away at a 90 degree angle, then slowly curve around, coming up on them from below and the side. Go for a stone shot. Their skull plate will rebound shafts. The 10lb+ Pike are strong and good fighters. We've seen 30lbers up here  And yes they eat birds, each other, and small annoying children.
Usually they are in the weeds in the shallows, hunting- either laying in wait or slow swimming.
Then some days they will indeed swim right up with the 'What the #### do you want' look  At that point you could probably get them with a dinner fork
Peace,
Erik Y.

thanks for the pic; I believe the place we are going to try has more large rock than weeds but Ive never dove there before just looked at it from the surface once. Small kids huh, haha; Ill make sure to gut them proper incase someone is missing in the area or maybe the yappy dog that used to live next door. Thirty pound pike, that would be something else as the biggest fish Ive speared was a carp of 15 pounds or so followed by 12 pound catfish.

Justin
