Can any one tell me where to find some good spots to spear in RI.I usually go to Newport(Ocean Drive) I like it because it has parking for shore diving. I go alone so, I don't go that deep 25' or less( I like big TOGS in shallow water)Parking is a must, sick of getting tickets. The less surf casters the better, nothing like getting to your favorite spot to see it overfished by 20 people. Its like swimming in a mine field.

if you only want to drive around new port that is a good place to go. i would walk far away from the places you can park. the more pressure the less the fish will be your frien and let you collect them. i would say find a used kayak and head for the hills.

Another spot you might want to try is parking on the grass below Castle Hill Inn right by the Coast Guard Station, as of the last few years it has been o.k. to do this. I have walked up the hill to the Inn, you can see on the left there is a path cutting thru the woods which leads right out to Castle Hill light house. Its a nice spot with lots to see, depth varies from 10ft to 50+ft. Visibility is usually decent to good with plenty of species. Keep your eye on the current but the good news is you can work the wall all the way down to butterball rock, then around the breakwall and can exit by the cottages back to your vehicle so current is not an issue. Boat traffic is not a factor at this spot. There is good blackfish, usually always bass 25+lbs., scup, seabass, fluke, blues, an occassionally some jacks, bonitas on Butterball ( the rock that breaks out in front of the jetty by the cottages )
