That's the link to the buoy data center. Newport temp is running around 48 deg.
In RI you cannot legally take tautog until May 1st. Here's the DMF website:

As of April 15 water temp in Newport is 49.8 according to NOAA here in Woods Hole 46.2.
48 in westport- folks said blues + bass were running.
I dove and saw nothing.

Vin what do you wear in water at these temps. I have a 5mm two piece with hood, boots and gloves all 5 mm, still to cold for me right now.
I dive all year (less free diving or in warm water) in in DUI CF 200 w/ a 7 mil hood and (w/ dry gloves & heat packs inside on deep dives when H20 is 40- 30s) regulate my undergarmets as temps heat up. In Summer I loose the gloves as my pref is neoprene bcs of dexterity and the simple fact that I am always digging around and bugging hunting etc. and have punctured the gloves...
If you add a 2/3 mil shortie on your 5 you'll be fine. the issue is more what the surface weather / conditions are when you break down you gear for winter diving wet. Unless you are part of a police unit with a heated van your like me breaking down gear in the snow or rain freezing and it suck being 100% wet.
