There isn't much to dive for around Ixtapa. Your best option is Potosi and it's 10 NM south from Ixtapa.
On good days you can find wahoo, dorado, sailfish and tuna in the rocks but I was there for halloween and dind't see a thing.
Water now is very clear, not sure what currents will be like in July but sometimes the water becomes so murky you can barely see your feet.
There are very few people doing freediving in the Ixtapa area, there is a commercial fisher named Chencho but I don't know his contact info. He goes diving every day in a very small panga.

I was there last march, the fishermen didnt think much of spearos, but we looked at the captain the hotel recommended, and he was twice the price of the guy our cab driver recommended (his cousin) the vis was best at the island, but it is a tourist trap, probably no spearing there.
The locals will treat you like gold if you are courteous, just ask questions and they will help you. Most locals speak at least a little english. Pull Pesos out of the ATM. If you try to pay in dollars you will be charged a "gringo tax".
I also found it interesting that they will not bring your bill to you at a resturaunt unless you ask for it "la qinta por favor"
Ixtapa is an amazing place. enjoy, you will definately want to go back

I dove it a couple of years ago in March. Not the best place to dive IMHO. Water was murky and not much reef I shot one fish. If your into Blue water hunting you might think about teasing up some sailfish or Marlin. Or cruising around looking for birds or floating stuff. I would look at another area if you want to shoot fish. Good luck and let us know how you do. Dive safe.

I dove Ixtapa too, and it sucked. The reefs are barren from the hookah divers. I saw them out there in broad daylight desimating the fish. I would try blue water though, there were quite a few sail fish at the port. Ixtapa is beautiful though, and I had a great time besides the diving.

I hired a local panga captain who likes to spear and invited a local I met selling octopus on the beach in Zihuatanejo. The three of us had a fun day, but the catch was nothing to write home about. All close to shore around the rocks and shoreline. Despite some serious illness the 2 days prior, I shot a handful of triggers and some others I didnt recognize and we caught a few mackerels trolling.
I'd agree with the overall sentiment that the inshore spearing is not the best...wish I'd tried blue water instead. Plenty of boats coming back from 1/2 days having caught sailfish.
