Anybody have any info about spearfishing in northern Saskatchewan? I'm planning a Walleye fishing trip in June and was wondering about spearfishing. I've heard its legal, but wondering about vis and water temps. Any information would be appreciated. The thoughts of shooting a large Northern Pike is tempting.

Here in Arkansas in lake Ouachita there are some good sized Pike, I missed a good one while bowfishing. They would prolly beat the hell out of you and or bite you but if my gun ever lines up on one, Ill for sure shoot it.

We (about 8) are headed to Saskatchewan this long weekend for a spearo trip. Spearo laws are the same as anglers in Saskatchewan- pike/walleye/trout are all legal. Waters in the northern half of sask are clear- up to 50' vis.
We have a forum on deeperblue.net specifically for BC/Alberta/Sask spearos.
Have fun, wear at least a 5mm,

Where are you going? Saskatchewan is a large province, not much smaller than Alaska, larger than Texas only 970,000 people. Don't call em walleye here they are called pickerel, or "picks".
Visibility can be anywhere from 3 meters to 8 meters, pike, like weedy areas and picks like deeper water.Visibility is entirely dependent upon any local wave action.
Main factor is cold water, good wetsuit necessary.
If you go to many lakes north of the Prince Albert national park, the possibility exists to have the lake entirely to yourself.

Thanks for all your comments.
We plan on flying into Winnipeg, then driving to Flin Flon (what a name) and then flying on small plane to lake Attetti (sp?). So we will be way up north. I know - - I won't be in Kansas anymore.
I get to shoot a lot of Walleye in the Arkansas lakes and the biggest I have got so far was 18 pounds. I haven't seen one that big for a long time, so I'm hoping to come across one in Canada. I hear the vis can be extremely good way up north, but I'm only going to take one gun due to luggage restrictions. Hope to stick a huge Pike.
So DMAY, you think I'm crazy for doing this? Well the last time I dove Catalina, I had some really scared seals blow past me and something really big was chasing them. We were at Ship Rock. Now THATS CRAZY!!
I was planning on taking my Riffe Mid-Range. Think that will be large enough?
ErikY, how did your trip go?

Do you live in ark?
Never heard of that lake. But there are hundreds of lakes that are unnamed in the N.E. of Sask. Be assured they never have seen anyone with a speargun, your gun should be fine.
Best of luck

Well we got skunked due to lack of local knowledge. We stayed for a few days hunting, but there were so many spots in large lakes that we spent all of our time seacrhing. I saw a few big Pike fins as they scurried out of sight, but that was it. As we were leaving, and older guy started telling us some sweet spots for next time. 1 couple did stay and hit a lake we had dived that has 30+ crystal viz... they got 3 Splake (some Trout cross-breed). The area we were in is relatively heavily fished compared to where you will be.
Bring your Deep Woods Off amigo, the mosquitoes and horseflies are huge!
There are 40lb Pike, 30lb Walleye and big Trout up where you're heading. Post some pics when you can :)
