View Full Version : Friendly Miami Spearfishing Tourney
07-02-2003, 11:34 AM
I proposed having a friendly spearfishing tournament in another thread and from the response it seems it is a good idea. So we need to figure out the details, but I figure it should be freediving. Let me know what you guys think. Post here if want to Enter. How does Saturday July 19 sound.
I'm in! Me plus 1 or 2. Freediving. Leave out of any marina, but we should all meet at Sands around 2 or 3pm.
Who's bringing the scale?
I'll bring a cooler full of beer.
We can all communicate via a predetermined VHF channel. This should be informal and the main goal is to have fun and get to know one another. However, I should emphasize that all fish must be within size regulations. Please do not show up with Minuta sandwiches or 15" groupers. I'm fine with the proposed date...for now. I'll start feeding the fish this weekend so they will be nice and plump for the scales.
07-02-2003, 07:32 PM
Count me in for that date. I would like to scuba dive, but I will freedive to make it fair. You might get more people if you allow scuba?

I agree with all of the above too.

I might be able to talk a few divers from down here to head up that way.
07-02-2003, 08:49 PM
sounds great! i will definitely be there with 4-5 others. i like the idea of meeting at sands cut. since it's not a serious tourney i say who cares if someone wants to use tanks. what do you all think about meeting the night before?
07-03-2003, 12:03 AM
Sounds like a good time. Count me in also...
07-03-2003, 06:24 AM
Sounds good, I will probably have 3-4 guys on my boat. as far as Tanks, its cool with me. The meeting before hand is a good idea, if someone wants to suggest a spot, maybe Ale house or something like that.
Ok, guys a few suggestions. How about meeting at the Miami Ale House on 87th Ave near the airport at 7pm June18th? This is a central location and traffic should not be a major dilema getting there from any direction. Also, the beer is cold!
Second, we can discuss logistics and perhaps even pitch in for a gift certificate at the Ale house for the largest fish. Also, if anyone needs to tag along on someone's boat this can be an opportunity. I may have an open spot if one of my pals can't make it.
Finally, bubble heads and lung packers are welcome. I only freedive, so I won't be able to accomodate any cylinders on my boat. Again, this is a great idea. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll all have a great and safe time. I welcome any other suggestions.

The alehouse will work for me. I think i'll stil to tanks after what happen to me today http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=90143
I just got back from a solo beach free dive/spearfishing of Miami beach 24 street. This was my first time diving of this part of the beach. I went off with my spear gun and dive flag. I swam out about half mile trying to find the reef line. On the way out I had a jet ski idle up to me to say hi and I had the coast guard fly pass me at WOT about 200 ft away which is close but, they saw me. After about 45mins of swimming and i still could not find the reef I started to swim back in. I was about 300yards away from the beach went i heard a boat coming . i swam toward my dive flag and looked around to see where the boat was. As I was doing a 360 look-around with my spear gun over my head when a 24+ cc at WOT was right on top of me. I jumped out the way just in the nick of time. I was so close I could touch the fing boat and the wake almost took off my mask. I was so mad and pissed off I want to pull the triger and shoot the fing driver of the boat. The ahole just keep going. He must have been blind not to see a dive flag and me with my arms up over my head. There need to be a boater license for all boater to inform them what a diver down flag is!!!
This is always a danger, but quite frankly you must be a bit out of your mind. First, freediving offshore in Miami Beach and at 24th street on a holiday weekend--you are nuts! Second, what you experienced is to be expected. I have only freedove offshore far up the coast in the North Palm Beach area and this was actually leaving the shore right at sun up. The traffic was not hectic nor was the area crowded with boats or condos or watercrafts.
You are free to scuba spear all you like, I don't have an issue with it. However, blaming the fact that you are choosing not to freedive because of your recent experience is probably a poor excuse for your poor judgement. Nevertheless, I'm glad you made it back to tell the story.

the alehouse seems a little north especially for any conch republicans. are any of you keys's folk coming up the night before? if not, the ale house will work for me! another suggestion would be to meet in the grove, Monty's anyone?
just another option
07-08-2003, 07:32 AM
The ale house will work fine for me too.
07-08-2003, 07:53 AM
Look like the site was down yesterday and I think we lost some posts. We need to finalize everything and find out whose bringing what. I have one of those little BBQ's so we can cook up some burgers and dogs.
Yep, it looks like we lost Spearoo's posts. Is the Ale house still on? We should have at least 5-6 guys, if not we can just cancel the meet. The rendevous is still sands cut, we should all try to make it by 3pm. I personally need some daylight time to remount the boat at the marina and all the other chores.
Does anyone have a scale? I'll bring some beer. As of now these are the guys who have confirmed they'll be going;
I believe each guy is bringing between 2-3 other guys so the total looks to be around 20+. Submerged, we may not need the dogs or burgers if we land plenty of fish. I don't mind giving my fish to feed the others (Assuming I'll catch anything). I may have a small Q available as well. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.
07-08-2003, 11:50 AM
Guys I have a digital scale up to 50lbs. I can bring it along.
07-14-2003, 11:58 AM
Everybody still in for this weekend?
I'm in plus my friend Jorge. That's if the boat pulls through, if it doesn't I'll be looking to tag along with someone.
I have a feeling the list has diminshed...
Forget the Ale house, I think.
07-14-2003, 03:48 PM
i don't think anyone has backed out have they? it looks to me like everyone is still on. as far as the ale house, i will be there along with a 4 others.
07-14-2003, 05:42 PM
You work with Sean at Avborne right?
07-14-2003, 06:15 PM
Sorry to bust in on my east coast brethren, but isn't "Friendly Miami" an oxymoron:D
07-14-2003, 06:41 PM
Count me in! Just remind me to not get hammered at the ale house :)
07-14-2003, 07:09 PM
yes i work with Sean. you guys go out a lot?
07-14-2003, 07:11 PM
He went out with me for the first time about a month ago, but he will be diving with me on Saturday. Its a small world, my girlfriend works there also.
07-14-2003, 07:17 PM
it's a small world indeed. i'm looking forward to this weekend. i turned my dive buddies onto spearboard and they are all going. We're going to have about 10 total between two boats. it should be fun!
07-14-2003, 08:07 PM
So what are the final details?
Are we meeting @ the Alehouse the day prior?
Will Sands be the Check in?
07-15-2003, 05:54 AM
I wanted to say Hi and let you guys know me and a few friends would be interested in a fun tournament but I'll be out of town this weekend.
I'll watch the board for the next one but it sounds like fun.
Sorry we had to miss this one.
No, I don't think anyone has publicly backed out, but I havn't seen posts from a few guys who originally said were going.
So the Ale house at around 7pm?
Yes, I think Sands is still on, this is the best rendevous.
Shimanboy, you're bringing the scale right?
I'll bring beer, is someone bringing a small Q? Who's good a filleting?
07-15-2003, 07:27 AM
It looks like we will have at least 4 boats, I have a small bbq, but I need to make sure it works. And Shimanoboy is bringing the scale, he will be on my boat. We can talk at the ale house about a time, and everything else.
07-15-2003, 08:41 PM
Reef Riderz will be bringing a couple of boats this weekend. Included are:
We'll be at the Ale house on fri.
Reef Riderz all about spearfishing without artificial air and without guns.
visit us at Reefriderz.com
07-15-2003, 09:30 PM
it's about time you showed up on the board. are you going to brave it out to the sand bar in your 7' coleman gamefisher w/ 2hp sears? i'm bringing the canoe with trolling motor!
07-16-2003, 08:31 AM
This saturday should be lots of fun.
Yes im bringing the scale.
Will also have some brewski's on the boat with submerged.
See everyone at the ale house
I'm bringing a case too!
What's up with got lungs???? What are you contributing, other than the smallest fish:D Just kidding, although I thought I'd make things a little interesting by talking some shit....This is something us Cubans are good at;)
Just a recap, I'm bringing the following;
Case of Beer
Probably some lime
See yall at Sands....:p
07-16-2003, 08:49 AM
You got the first two right, the rest will be on my boat
Thanks for bringing the lime, dude! Good, maybe we can give out an award for talking the most smack.:p
I'll see all you spearos at the Ale house. Remember,
"If the beer is cold, we'll win the gold."---Chris Mullin, 1984 Summer Olympic, Los Angeles
You may want to reconsider bringing your scale, I intend to break your scale with my stringer.:D Looks like I'm in the lead for the Most Smack Award.
07-16-2003, 01:59 PM
RJ not sure but your going to have to kill tons of trigger fish in orde to break the scale.
07-16-2003, 06:22 PM
i'll be bringing paper cups! also biggest parrotfish! really, i'll be bringing a bunch of beer and rum and might pick up a cheapy grill. should be fun
you left out largest grunt! that is a cuban favorite:)
i'll bring a frisbee/ football or something also
Damn it looks like we're gonna do more drinking than fishing. It should be a great time. The weather looks like it's gonna cooperate, all we need to do is bring in some nice fish. Can someone bring a camera?
See you guys at the Ale house. Love them grunts!;)
07-16-2003, 06:54 PM
I'll bring a handle of something special and a camera too film all you F'ed up.
For Everyinchcounts i'll bring a 12" ruler. That should cover your biggest fish.
07-16-2003, 07:02 PM
out of air,
instead of a ruler bring a micrometer!:D
07-17-2003, 06:21 AM
Yeah the grunts rolando is going to kill can be measured with the micrometer
Quick spy report: A local fisherman is reporting large schools of 2mm grunts in and around of Ajax Reef. Most of these grunts have been spotted in 40'.
Are you guys sure you're bringing the micrometer for the grunts or for someone else's body part?:D
07-17-2003, 07:41 AM
we can have barbeque grunts
07-17-2003, 05:51 PM
any of you guys check out the "new shark attack" thread in General spearfishing forum? check out the photos of the guy's leg
Yeah, I saw the pics. Unfortunately, I was having lunch at my desk at the time...talk about indigestion. Those Bulls on the east have all probably tasted human flesh at some point. The problem is many migrants loosing their lives in the Florida straits and ultimately ending up in the belly of sharks. And those idiots that feed the sharks in the bahamas.
Are you going to bring a small grill? I was unable to pick one up. What time is everyone arriving at the Ale house tomorrow?
07-17-2003, 09:27 PM
got lungs? hit me up on the cell tomorrow. I got in late today, saw Bad Boys 2. Its tight work for those who are thinking about seeing it.
See you all at the ale house.
07-18-2003, 09:42 AM
Are bluewater fish legal for the tournament?
The reefriderz have been known to spear bluewater fish without guns. Looks like veloso left those out of his boat. Dont know if we'll head out that far but its a possibility. If not we have EVERYINCHCOUNTS to bring in the "high and the low" catches of the day.
OUTOFAIR don't forget the micrometer.
07-18-2003, 09:50 AM
What happens if you miss in bluewater with hawiian slings?
Mr. Urineman (Typicalpiss),
Bring whatever you want as long as it's within regulation size and legal to spear. Remember this is an informal tourney, more like a gathering of local spearos. Good Luck!
07-18-2003, 11:43 AM
I'M MEETING OUT OF AIR AT AROUND 5:30- 6:00 STRAIGHT FROM WORK. I'LL ALSO BE BRINGING A GRILL TOMORROW. SEE YOU ALL AT THE ALE HOUSE.
07-18-2003, 12:12 PM
Try to get one of the high tables in the back
07-18-2003, 01:53 PM
Submerged and i will be monitoring channel 68.
I say we meet at the sandbar @ 1
07-19-2003, 05:48 PM
Hey guys I had a great time today. We definitely have to do this again?
Where are the pics guys?
07-19-2003, 10:19 PM
this sounds like so much fun that i might have to get in on the next one
07-20-2003, 08:42 AM
if you missed the festvites fri/sat, you missed a great time. I enjoyed meeting you all, and having a drink or two at the ale house;) sat was a great day to be on the water. Everyone came in with some nice fish but Submerged came through as top dog with an awesome grouper, good shit Rene! Overall we had a blast and to those of you that didn't make it, don't miss the next one.
Submerged caught some very nice fish! I'll let him elaborate on the specifics and I'm sure someone will post some pics. I was very impressed by the catch his boat brought in. Some very nice blacks, a red, hogs, and some nice snappers. I personally did not have a great day, after hitting the water late at 9:45, I only took home a few mid-size hogs.
The Reefraiderz took quite a few hogs all on slings! They also won the prize for the coolest boats, especially the Chiquita bananna special. Sorry, I did not make it to the Ale house. I had to make some concessions with wifie, and the drinking at the Ale house with some internet buddies lost out, sorry guys maybe next time.
Lets set another one up, I'll need to reaccess my waypoints, because some have gone dry.
07-20-2003, 12:19 PM
Fri and sat were awesome. I enjoyed meeting you all and having a few beers at the ale house with everyone.
We need to do another before the end of the summer.
To all who missed you should try and make it to the next one. I have a few pics that will be posted later tonight
07-21-2003, 06:35 AM
I had a great time and am looking forward to the next one. It was great meeting all you guys. I gotta thank my crew Eddy and Sean, we need to come with a team name, you guys did great. we ended up with some nice fish, dispite spending the entire morning getting the bigger grouper out of ledge, which was stuck after we shot him. Eddy shot his personal best Mango, and biggest snapper of the trip, and Sean came in with some nice hogs, he should of had the Red also but shot a little high (next time). here are the pics we have so far, one of our cooler and one of our team with the ReefRiderz, who still owe us shirts.
07-21-2003, 10:21 AM
Thanks rene. We need to go again some time
maybe mini season
07-21-2003, 12:08 PM
Sorry I missed it guys but my ear hasn't been up to speed. Im waiting for it to heal up b4 getting back in the water.
Nice job on the black.

07-22-2003, 07:42 PM
We need to do this again. Don't worry I will remind Forrest about the shirts for me, you, and eddy. The fish fry was great. Thanks for the fun weekend.
07-29-2003, 12:03 PM
Here are some more pics, Cook finally got to us. lets see if we can do it again in August
