Friendly Miami Spearfishing Tourney

I proposed having a friendly spearfishing tournament in another thread and from the response it seems it is a good idea. So we need to figure out the details, but I figure it should be freediving. Let me know what you guys think. Post here if want to Enter. How does Saturday July 19 sound.

I'm in! Me plus 1 or 2. Freediving. Leave out of any marina, but we should all meet at Sands around 2 or 3pm.

Who's bringing the scale?

I'll bring a cooler full of beer.

We can all communicate via a predetermined VHF channel. This should be informal and the main goal is to have fun and get to know one another. However, I should emphasize that all fish must be within size regulations. Please do not show up with Minuta sandwiches or 15" groupers. I'm fine with the proposed date...for now. I'll start feeding the fish this weekend so they will be nice and plump for the scales.

Sounds good, I will probably have 3-4 guys on my boat. as far as Tanks, its cool with me. The meeting before hand is a good idea, if someone wants to suggest a spot, maybe Ale house or something like that.

Ok, guys a few suggestions. How about meeting at the Miami Ale House on 87th Ave near the airport at 7pm June18th? This is a central location and traffic should not be a major dilema getting there from any direction. Also, the beer is cold!

Second, we can discuss logistics and perhaps even pitch in for a gift certificate at the Ale house for the largest fish. Also, if anyone needs to tag along on someone's boat this can be an opportunity. I may have an open spot if one of my pals can't make it.

Finally, bubble heads and lung packers are welcome. I only freedive, so I won't be able to accomodate any cylinders on my boat. Again, this is a great idea. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll all have a great and safe time. I welcome any other suggestions.

I just got back from a solo beach free dive/spearfishing of Miami beach 24 street. This was my first time diving of this part of the beach. I went off with my spear gun and dive flag. I swam out about half mile trying to find the reef line. On the way out I had a jet ski idle up to me to say hi and I had the coast guard fly pass me at WOT about 200 ft away which is close but, they saw me. After about 45mins of swimming and i still could not find the reef I started to swim back in. I was about 300yards away from the beach went i heard a boat coming . i swam toward my dive flag and looked around to see where the boat was. As I was doing a 360 look-around with my spear gun over my head when a 24+ cc at WOT was right on top of me. I jumped out the way just in the nick of time. I was so close I could touch the fing boat and the wake almost took off my mask. I was so mad and pissed off I want to pull the triger and shoot the fing driver of the boat. The ahole just keep going. He must have been blind not to see a dive flag and me with my arms up over my head. There need to be a boater license for all boater to inform them what a diver down flag is!!!

This is always a danger, but quite frankly you must be a bit out of your mind. First, freediving offshore in Miami Beach and at 24th street on a holiday weekend--you are nuts! Second, what you experienced is to be expected. I have only freedove offshore far up the coast in the North Palm Beach area and this was actually leaving the shore right at sun up. The traffic was not hectic nor was the area crowded with boats or condos or watercrafts.

You are free to scuba spear all you like, I don't have an issue with it. However, blaming the fact that you are choosing not to freedive because of your recent experience is probably a poor excuse for your poor judgement. Nevertheless, I'm glad you made it back to tell the story.

Yep, it looks like we lost Spearoo's posts. Is the Ale house still on? We should have at least 5-6 guys, if not we can just cancel the meet. The rendevous is still sands cut, we should all try to make it by 3pm. I personally need some daylight time to remount the boat at the marina and all the other chores.

I believe each guy is bringing between 2-3 other guys so the total looks to be around 20+. Submerged, we may not need the dogs or burgers if we land plenty of fish. I don't mind giving my fish to feed the others (Assuming I'll catch anything). I may have a small Q available as well. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Quick spy report: A local fisherman is reporting large schools of 2mm grunts in and around of Ajax Reef. Most of these grunts have been spotted in 40'.

Yeah, I saw the pics. Unfortunately, I was having lunch at my desk at the time...talk about indigestion. Those Bulls on the east have all probably tasted human flesh at some point. The problem is many migrants loosing their lives in the Florida straits and ultimately ending up in the belly of sharks. And those idiots that feed the sharks in the bahamas.

Are bluewater fish legal for the tournament?

The reefriderz have been known to spear bluewater fish without guns. Looks like veloso left those out of his boat. Dont know if we'll head out that far but its a possibility. If not we have EVERYINCHCOUNTS to bring in the "high and the low" catches of the day.

if you missed the festvites fri/sat, you missed a great time. I enjoyed meeting you all, and having a drink or two at the ale house;) sat was a great day to be on the water. Everyone came in with some nice fish but Submerged came through as top dog with an awesome grouper, good shit Rene! Overall we had a blast and to those of you that didn't make it, don't miss the next one.

Submerged caught some very nice fish! I'll let him elaborate on the specifics and I'm sure someone will post some pics. I was very impressed by the catch his boat brought in. Some very nice blacks, a red, hogs, and some nice snappers. I personally did not have a great day, after hitting the water late at 9:45, I only took home a few mid-size hogs.

The Reefraiderz took quite a few hogs all on slings! They also won the prize for the coolest boats, especially the Chiquita bananna special. Sorry, I did not make it to the Ale house. I had to make some concessions with wifie, and the drinking at the Ale house with some internet buddies lost out, sorry guys maybe next time.

Lets set another one up, I'll need to reaccess my waypoints, because some have gone dry.

I had a great time and am looking forward to the next one. It was great meeting all you guys. I gotta thank my crew Eddy and Sean, we need to come with a team name, you guys did great. we ended up with some nice fish, dispite spending the entire morning getting the bigger grouper out of ledge, which was stuck after we shot him. Eddy shot his personal best Mango, and biggest snapper of the trip, and Sean came in with some nice hogs, he should of had the Red also but shot a little high (next time). here are the pics we have so far, one of our cooler and one of our team with the ReefRiderz, who still owe us shirts.
