A bunch of my employees were hassling me that they wanted uhus (parrot fish) to cook for the weekend, and it looked like there was going to be a break in the weather yesterday. I grabbed my small gun, the Mini-Stealth (two 5/8" bands with a 9/32" shaft), and hit the water late after work. The river was running, so I had to swim half a mile out with a brown, lo-viz, and freezing cold surface layer. Hey! It's good practice for California! I got out to the point, and I couldn't catch an uhu to save my life. I was reminded of how the ocean is... you accept what it gives you, and when you have a pre-determined idea of how things are going to be, it will often teach you a lesson. I headed out to to the ulua holes in the fading light in hopes of finding some better ground.
At the first hole, I found a school of omilu circling under a rock. I picked out the biggest and.... stoned it. Awesome! 13 pounds, my biggest this year. The Mini-Stealth is so silent and accurate, that the school didn't spook until I swam back down and pulled the dead fish out of the hole.
At the second hole, as I crept along the side of the rock towards the cave, I spotted a decent white ulua heading into the hole. I patiently waited for him to circle around, carefully picked the exact spot where I wanted to put my spear and... stoned it. Immediately, 6 or 7 whites came cruising out of the cave and curiously circled me. I could have reached out and touched them. The one that I got went 36#, my biggest of the year.
I find it rather ironic that my biggest white ulua and biggest omilu for the year were both taken with my smallest gun. Sorry, no pics of the fish. My employees chopped them up before I could get my camera.. lol.
I gotta say, this has been a banner year for uluas. I've gotten 13 so far... woohoo! Now if I could just get the bluewater action going. So far it's been a sad year... just one mahi. However, I hear that a 40# bull mahi and 55# ono were hooked yesterday..... so, we'll see. Maybe this weekend.
