Went out Tuesday with some friends to dive an area of hardbottom out of Ft. Myers. The spot, at 147ft, had never been dove before to any of our knowledge. This would be a recon dive to see what was actually down there and if it would be worth fishing during the tourneys. Before reaching the site we agreed not to shoot the biggest fish we saw, saving them for the upcoming grouper tournaments. As I descended it appeared as though the bottom was moving. Grouper and snapper everywhere...and big! I approached a pod of three emmence carbos. This was not my first choice of fish, the other two were larger! But i agreed not to shoot the biggest, um besides the other two took off and werent comin back anytime soon. Not wanting to scare off this one i stopped all motion and started diggin in the sand. From the corner of my eye i saw he was interested but timid. He was out of range so i drifted his way. He started to turn away, so i turned my body and head away from him, but kept the gun pointed. On this cue he then turned almost broadside, i was now in range, i turned my head slightly to sight the gun and stoned the puppy. Sorry no drama. We did, however, see half a dozen sharks on the ascent but they kept their distance.
The grouper went over 100+

Sammy sent me those Pic's this AM.... i about shit !!! nice shootin Carson. We were out yesterday a few miles from where you shot that beast ... and your right about the sharks they are out in full force. Sammy and I had to chase off 4 big bulls(2 eight footers and 2 12 footers ) the were verry aggressive.Congrats again

Fish mounted! That is awesome. I would have a fish like that down to Lee's Taxidermy in St Pete in a hearbeat.

No mount. The fish was sold at a fish house the next day. Maybe a replica one day but they're awfully expensive to get done. Ill have to sell a lot more fish before hes on my wall.

KeysSpearfisher... I had to treat Johnnylongblades to a night of drinkin when he got that 41# black with y'all out of Marathon. I took him to the Pepsi 400 in Daytona. So now i think he owes me pretty big. Lets see, if his 41# got him to the Pepsi 400 with kegs on me, what will a black over 100# get me? Probably a night of Busch beer on tap at Coconuts in Big Pine hittin on old ladies with less teeth than my 4 month old niece.
We're still tryin to do a trip to Cay Sal but the weather and boat problems held us in port the last two times we tried to go. Hopefully we'll get it done sometime in the near future.

we decided not to do a deco dive. on a 26% mix we had 9 min no deco time. fortunately i found him early in the dive. iffy situation if i'd seen him when it was time to go up.
