Regs vary by state I believe.

It seems commonplace that "game" fish are a no no (Largemouth bass, walleye, etc)

In Florida I believe you can spear no fish in freshwater. The only fish that can live in both like tarpon and snook you cant spear either. Look up the short spearing rules at myfwc.com here http://myfwc.com/marine/spearing.htm

We can spear 1/2 the regular limit of any fish during the open spearfishing season and rough fish (carp, gar, etc) anytime here in Arkansas. Most states do not allow freshwater spearfishing for "game fish". We are more fortunate than the average and have spearfishing in the large lakes in the state. See http://scuba.royalcs.com/ouachita

Also in Beaver lake you cannot spear any black bass "Large mouth, Small mouth or Kentucky". That really sucks since that and a rare catfish is all I seem to see.

I usually go primarily for crappie, big bluegills and red ears, along with the occasional walleye or catfish. Largemouth are allowed in Ouachita if over 13" but I seldom shoot them for fear they might not measure legal. Everything looks bigger under water.

How do you get around the Crappie length limit?

No length limit on crappie. I personally shoot the hell outta some bass. But I mostly go for cats.

In Oklahoma we are stuck with rough fish and cats. Bass and crappie are off limits.
