Norfolk/Virginia beach area??

I have a friend in the Navy at Norfolk and I might visit him during the first week of August.

Hows the fishing and/or spearing in the area? Any charter boats that take divers / spearos?

How about line fishing?

I may bring a 17 ft boat for some of the inshore or calm water areas.

A 17ft boat will take you to the tower/tower reef on a good day or to the islands of the CBBT. Either one would yield fish to a H&L or to a spear if you can find a spot to get your boat into the parking lot.

Ummm...I would be real cautious about a 17' boat going out to the tower. That is several miles offshore, good day or not. I would caution against it, but that is not to say it would be a problem. Most small boats like that lack the right stuff as well. Weather radio, marine radio, GPS, ect. If it were my boat, I don't think I would do it. Just looking out for you guys. The water here can turn nasty quick, esspecially miles offshore. CBBT is fine.

My bad...not trying to give false impressions or anything...First week in August there would be about 5 million boats to lend aid if necessary. I used to run my 19ft Bayliner out there many a time. Young and dumb I reckon. I second that the CBBT would be fine if you leave from Little Creek or Lynnhaven in any 17 footer.

When I was a military diver we always ran our 18' whalers out there and beyond, but we had a ton of support. We used to run out 10 miles or more in 6 to 8 foot seas, but we weren't the sanest of fellas either!

Thanks for the replies guys! I dont have a weather radio or marine radio. Do have a GPS.

My buddy the squid will be working so I will be out looking for fun for 3-5 days on my own.

The boat is a 17x54 modified vee with a 40 hp on it. Its not the ocean but the Mississippi can get nasty when the current and wind dont' cooperate.

Any boaterless spearos who would like to tag along/guide during the week?

What would be available or within reach for a boat that size? Any wrecks or reef within reach?

What about fish? Any lobster? Crab? Flounder?

What lic. and rules for spear or H/L?





I will probably get to tour this guys ship with him one day during the week. I just need to look at the calender and figure everything out.
