I am heading to the coast of Croatia in 2 weeks and was wondering if anyone has done any spearfishing there. I wil be on the island of Mjlet about 30 km NW of Dubrovnik. I plan on doing a bunch of diving so I figure I would see if anyone had anything to say about the place.

The only thing that I know about Croatia is that all the Croatian women that I've met were beautiful.

OK, I know that's not very relevent.

I have been spear fishing in croatia and off the coast of Montenegro the past three summers. The water is super clear, very salty, and the main fish you will encounter include white sea bass(great eating) , dorado, st.pierre (John Dory), Drum, Snapper, and others in the deep deep zones. The fish are difficult to stalk, they are fast and skiddish, I reccomend using a trident spear. You also may need to purchase a license to spear fish, i think it is 80 Euros.

good luck

Heading off this evening, if I can find one of those disposable underwater cameras I will try to take pics. Will be staying on the Isle of Mljet, 75% of which is a national park. They have restrictions on scuba and the need for a license so I will do mostly freediving from shore. Not bringing my guns(hitting Denmark and Switz. beforehand and dont want to carry the gear) but is it looks like a good spot will buy one while I am there. Will post on conditions when return

I just returned from a long trip, part of which entailed a week of diving along he coast of Croatia. First I woul say that it is an absolutely beautiful place. We stayed on Mljet which is an island about 2 hours by boat from Dubrovnik and half of which is a national park. Being a national park I thought there would be some good diving from shore so I packed the minimal amount of snorkel gear. I have to say I was sadly dissapointed by what I saw and didnt see. We found a cove that was pretty secluded and dove from shore to a depth of 40-50 feet. Other than an octopus the largest thing I saw was a wrasse no more than 12 inches long. Visibility was about 50ft and water was very warm but only small fish. Sadly thre was a good amount of trash both in the water and along the rocky shore, and by the looks of it was something that has been a long term problem. If this is what one finds in a national park I can only imagine the rest of the coast is pretty tough. Still great food, great wine, great weather just lousy shore diving. Don't know what the deeper waters are like, I know they have grouper and amberjacks in the waters, hope its better there.
