What recipe do you recomend for the Donkeys?
Otherwise nice day in the blue.
07-27-2006, 02:46 PM
:stupid: Sick him Spike!!!!!!
All thoughts aside, We slayed some good fish, picked up some big bugs and had some cooked for us at the restaurant. Fiished the day with a stiff coctail and slept like a baby, only to awake and do it all over again.
Two days of marathon diving can wear your ass out.

Cant help being a little jealous here.

Quetzal: Smoked, *******.
Whoah tiger! I was just curious- I'd love to know that they were edible, I'd shoot'em up. I don't know what ******* stands for but I'll be big and not get offended. I didn't think Donkey was such an offensive term.
What kind of ******* **** do you run w/ 15 people in the water at one time?
Again with the ******* ******? It's called a dive charter boat- perhaps you've heard of them... we actually take 20pax with 2 mates. Sometimes a little shift in the wind can change your anchor set and then you have to do some of that "captain sh*t". I can't expect you to understand the rigors of interpreting ocean conditions and having peoples lives in your hands on a daily basis.
If you have AJ recipe's I honestly would try it if you shared...
08-01-2006, 07:16 AM
Cut the AJ shoulders into 1 1/2 inch cubes, roll them in a mix of yellow mustard and hamburger seasoning, then corn meal. Deep fry them and enjoy. Works for 'cuda too.
08-01-2006, 05:23 PM
Thanks MJ- Will I know the worms when I see them and is there a specific size that is more palatable?
08-01-2006, 10:49 PM
mjacobs, This guy has a BS in something.
BS Marine Biology-UNCW
USCG Master 50 ton Captain
OMER Sales Rep."
Oh yeah, that stands for Bull Shit.
Easy there killer!!! Everyone doesn't realize that you like fresh pasta alfredo (worms) with your fish. Call me when you have a minute about Sunday.
08-01-2006, 11:33 PM
Sheesh, Q! You do have a penchant for research, are you not in the scientific field also? Again, I'll be big and blow off your petty libel.
Look man, if you eat AJ's then cool, I'll eat them too. But I personally don't know anyone else that shoots them for any other reason than tournament points or chum. I would have made the top 15 at Hatteras this weekend if I shot any of the 50+lb Donkeys I saw- and even though they were sold for a charity, I still just don't shoot stuff I'm not going to eat.
Even though it's a public forum, I'll try to refrain from making rude comments like asking for recipe's and such. I shouldn't be such a ********, considering I'm full of BS.
08-02-2006, 08:34 PM
Um... yeah. If you really want your thread to go this direction then here we go.
I'll take your challenge- I'll shoot a fresh fish [Seriola dumerili (ironic specie ;) )], then pickle and smoke 1/2 for a day and fry the other 1/2 in mustard and stuff, serve it in a double blind taste test to a focus group, and I'll get the results back to you on how great this "fresh" fish tasted. I'll make it a "culinary Ichthyological" research project. Totally objective.
As far as the PM goes, you can choke on it. I tried to be an adult and put a band-aid on your little scratched pride but I guess you need more than a diaper change. Clearly you've read all of my posts and if you can call bullshit on anything I've written then I welcome you to it. Don't post on a public forum if you can't take some flack, that's why there's e-mail.
I wanted a recipe and you started a slap fight. Happy now?
08-03-2006, 09:05 AM
You will definitely notice the worms when fileting. Thay are in the tail sections of larger AJs. The sections with worms would probably be okay to eat once cooked, but thay are so unpalatable looking I've never tried that. The shoulders are generally worm free. Smaller AJs tend to have less worms. Try a 20 pounder or just go for the shoulders on a larger one.
08-03-2006, 09:10 AM
Please not "THE END" I just choked on a Frito laughing so hard!!!
Maybe you two should decend to 100' swim away from each other, turn and fire your spearguns. First one back to the boat without a spear poking from your gut wins!!
08-03-2006, 09:18 AM
NC also known as the "New California" section. This is great! To think all of the best entertainment used to reside in the Cali threads....No more. EEEEASSSSSTTTT CCCOOOOASSSTTT. Wurd.
Standing by for more action.
Oh and Ryan, I volunteer for the taste test...but you can keep the worms. We will be down next weekend if you have some time. We will probably take CB's boat in a SE-erly direction for hogs, bugs and gags. Bring it.
Weather looks decent for the weekend, hope everyone gets out.
08-03-2006, 09:31 AM
Oh hell, I smell a mini tournament...
ps. Guys, I'd buy boxing gloves and we could settle this in a civilized way...man, I bet they don't allow that in 7th grade anymore like they used to.
08-03-2006, 09:38 AM
Now your talkin' combine them both.
Round robin boxing tourney atop Frying Pan Tower. Resulting in an x-factor determined on your placing...
4th=.70...and so on.
Slingin steel....you then multiply the #lbs of fish by your x-factor from the boxing
08-03-2006, 09:51 AM
On a serious note, It is my sincere hope that nobody is busting Quetzal's hump for liking AJ's. Now, catch him trying to eat a Remora, and he's got it coming... :D
It's a shame that more people don't eat AJ's. There's no damned shortage of them from what I can tell.
Oh, I like the idea of getting up on the tower, that'd be cool.
NOW, STOP DERAILING CAP'T TOM'S THREAD WITH YOUR ARGUMENT! Move it to personal email, nasty PM's or telephone calls... :D
08-03-2006, 03:43 PM
NOW, STOP DERAILING CAP'T TOM'S THREAD WITH YOUR ARGUMENT!This was Quetzal's thread...
Maybe you two should descend to 100' swim away from each other, turn and fire your spearguns. Not fair to him- I don't make bubbles when I hunt.
It is my sincere hope that nobody is busting Quetzal's hump for liking AJ'sI asked for a recipe. No judgement was passed by me.
It's a shame that more people don't eat AJ'sMaybe more will after the test.
Mark- thanks for taking the time to share with the community. I will certainly take your advice and post my results.

Don't move this private unless you are willing to 8-way us and I am one of them. Sign me up for the boxing, or at least the ref. I will make sure that there is no "dancing around the catwalk". I think we should do a little tournie. We can award a solid gold plastic trophy and that team would have bragging rights till the next one. Maybe do one every month or so. What do you guys think?
Q- GS just likes to stir the pot a little. Don't take it so serious. We both know that half the fun of shooting an AJ is the fight and you are not scared to hang on. At least you don't waste the fish and eat it. That being said, if you practice shooting alittle more, you could hunt grouper instead of AJ's.
GS- I know a couple other buddies that love AJ also. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't tell you how it tastes. They also say that it is good eating. I do know that in other areas, they are very desirable. You know that the word "donkey" is what is winding him up. Maybe you should be a little more politically correct and say "a$$". Now the first one if you that starts telling me that you like the taste of barracuda, you've got it coming.
08-04-2006, 07:58 AM
Cuda's great you just have to smoke it...hell I could smoke my flip-flop, throw some Texas Pete on it and BAM! I'm eating high on the hog.
As for the trophies...I think we have a couple from the AS tourney that are sssaaaawweeeeeetttt. Complete w/ gold plated plastic largemouth bass on them. A little duct tape and a sharpie marker and we have custom bling to hand out.
And yes..."tagging ass" sounds much better than "shooting a donkey".
Ryan had posted about possibly working on a tourney for next month...I will help out any way that I can, sounds like a blast.
08-05-2006, 01:08 AM
Ryan, fry the donkeys up! Anything fried is good. Just watch out for the worms. Again, if you need any help with the tournament let me know.
08-05-2006, 11:26 AM
Fresh AJ cut a 1" thick chunk with no bloodline(just white flesh), salt pepper, put tablespoon of butter in a hot pan, cook almost halfwaythrough and flip (should only take a couple minutes, do not overcook) add more salt and enjoy. Pan should be darn hot and a little smoke and backening should happen. Try it, everybodys taste is different, AJ has a lot of texture, my brother prefers it to many other popular fishes.

Was gonna grab one today but had a charter diver go out of air at 90' and bolt. Called it an early day. I'll post a new thread with pics of the process when I do obtain a specimen.
