Hi i am moving to Astoria from LA and would like some pointers about spearfishing in NY. What are good locations close to Queens. Local spearfishing clubs. Only interested in freediving No SCUBA. How far is RI from there and DFG regulation websites.
I never did striper hunting. I assume a sliptip is needed like our white seabass. Can't wait !!!
Thanks in advance and happy spearfishing.

it is about a 4 hour drive, depending on traffic. you do not need a slip tip. in ri most use a kayak to better the odds at nice bass.

its a little shorter than 4 hrs ...Ri is great place but a bit of a drive from ny...
There are some spots in nj that have good size bass (mainly june and sept) that would be like a 1 to 2 hour drive...

One to two hours sounds great. Iam used to driving more than two hours in Cali whenever i wanted to go fishing so it wouldn't be a problem. Is there any other fish besides sturgeon and the blue fin tuna that is illegal to shoot??
there is also the east end of long island, either the north or south fork. the south fork (montauk, hamptons) is probably about 2 hrs from you. there are great spots off of montauk for big bass and also pelagics offshore (tuna, dolphin, etc). block island is also a very accesable spot by boat (there are charters that go there). with visibility often 30+ feet, it is some of the finest diving in the n.e. on the north fork, there are a few charters that leave from greenport and head out to the eastern islands off of orient point. spots include, plum gut, the sluiceway, the race, etc. big bass can be found in all these areas and they are about atwo hour drive from you to the dock. best of luck.
