Diving Maine October 16th - 20th

Fellow Spearos,

I'll be up in Maine visiting my cousins the week of October 16th - 20th. I'll be in the Portland area for a couple of days and up around Schoodic Point for a few days, too. If anyone would like to do some spearing during that time, let me know.

My only question is - what type of suit do I need? I have a 5mm, is that enough?

Not sure i use a 7MM in The CT RI area, I would think that you would want at least that in october, depending on your personal resistance to cold, definatly use a vest and hood, nights get pretty cold up there.

I don't think my 5mm will cut it for Maine in October. I know it gets cold up there, Skell. My cousins live Downeast and I've been going up there since I was too young to remember. Still, I'd like to go spearfishing.

There are very few fish to shoot around Schoodic in my experience. However, it is very cool diving, good drop offs, lotsa invertebrates and if you want to kill things, I THINK you can legally catch the abundant crabs. The open exposed area seems to have better vis than other areas around Acadia.

I had much better luck spearing south of Portland.

I wouldn't try it without a good 7mm suit, but I hate to be cold.

If you're planning to be in the water near Portland around that time of the year, I'll dive with ya, man. I plan on bringing my speargun and gear.
