Looking at heading out to Vallarta in late August. never been and haven't a clue finding a panga, where to do so and how much to expect to pay? Any leads would be great, thanks

Drive south from Vallarta and make your way to Boca de Tomatlan before 10:00 a.m. Boca is south of Mismaloya. See if you can catch Lino taking the panga water taxi (I think it leaves Boca at about 10:30 am) to his restaurant, The Marlin, at Yalapa. Yalapa is the last stop. Lino can arrange for you to get a panga for spearfishing. If not, he has the best seafood and coldest beers at Yalapa - right on the beach. It used to be you could only get there by panga. There's a road now to Yalapa they put in to construct power poles. It's passable, but take the panga water taxi. Bring your gear to Yalapa If you swim out around the corner to the south, there's oysters, scallops, and maybe snapper. Water is warm - but thermocline is shallow.

I just got back from a week of spearing in yelapa. water temp 86 degrees (way to warm) thermocline at 60 feet in most places. dove a dozen spots/ offshore pinnacles, etc, up to 25 miles south, took kayaks around the corner etc. first of all if you see big jacks in the bay, they are toro, and barely edible. other than that you may see some small snapper, maybe rainbow runners in the blue. the locals hit the scallops, etc pretty hard, we didnt find much in that department either. All the locals we spoke to said that the winter/spring is the good time. Yelapa is beautifull and the folks generally really nice. BRING BUG REPELENT this time of year too. As far as diving PV proper goes. its near impossible to get a panga for less than 350 a day, fine if theres a few of you but as for me- way to much to do by myself

Ok so maybe PV and vicintity isn't the call for late August. What about La Paz, and the sea of Cortez in general. Is this a decent time and if so where/who should I look into? I'm very keen on tuna, a small yellowfin would make me v. happy, I'm easy that way

la paz area would be better, maybe not get tuna, but you would have a good crack at a good variety of fish in the 30----- BIGGER range. you could try andrea tomba at desea adventures
