I'm headed home to CT early next week to visit my folks and we'll hopefully be going to BI by boat for a few days; I was wondering if anyone would be willing to show a FL boy how to shoot a few strippers or tautog. I'll be bringing home all my own gear just in case I get the opportunity to try out spearing BI. If anyone is gonna be there the middle or end of next week let me know. I'd love to hook up with a local so they can show me the way. Thanks

Looks like I'll be there by next weekend if the weather holds out. If anyone is interested in meeting up for some shooting or drinks pm me.

PJ,

Unfortunately I will not be spearfishing next weekend. If you are around later in the week, I may have some time, but it sounds like you will be in BI. In my last few trips out (shore diving RI) I have seen large numbers of scup, some triggerfish, decent numbers of tautog. I have progressively seen fewer stripers over the last couple of weeks, and none were keepers. BI or the waters near BI should be good. On Thursday my sons and I got about 10 bluefish at the race on rod and reel. Although I expect September to be better, you are coming at a good time, and there should be plenty of fish. Good luck.

I was in BI 2 weeks ago and didnt see any stripers.. I dove the north side and saw a couple large tog...Water was super warm...(maybe too warm for stripers?) Couple small sharks around the north rip and some trigger fish closer in at some of the rock piles

Thanks for all the info, it will be a big help. I've never speared in NE so I'm looking forward to trying something new. Even if I don't see any stripers it sounds like I should at least be able to get a few triggers or tautog. If I manage to spear anything and don't freeze my butt off, remember I'm from FL, I'll post a few pics.

Thanks again

I should rephrase my statement then, “it was super warm for RI” (that means I had my full 3/2 surfing suit and wasn’t cold right away) After about and hour and half, i had the shakes

there were lots of bass around the narragansett, well where i was. a few possible keepers but didnt risk it. so around BI it should look good i know of four 40's taken in 55 feet of water but was not told the place so i wouldnt go. oh watch out for makos there have been reports of some big boys around eating bluefish

Well I'm off to BI tommorrow with my parents for a few days of r&r at anchor. I gsavely got my spearing equipment here and loaded on the boat so now all there is left to do is get there and try to find a few stripers. If nothing else it will be nice to see some new territory. If the under h2o hunting gods are with me I'll post my results. Wish me luck!

Well the trip turned to shit! It's now friday night and I'm back in my house and NOT on a boat. We left as planned thursday afternoon and entered Long Island Sound and headed east toward BI and the weather turned on us. We were headed dead into a 15 knot wind plus pushing hard 9 knots against a heavy tide so we deceided to change plans and head to Port Jefferson Long Island for a few days instead. Well everything was going great until we awoke this morning to a dreary misty morning rain with no chance of a clearing sky until monday. As we sat in the cabin of the 34 ft cutty cabin for a few hours watching the steady rain come down we decided that during the first break in weather we'd head home; we left Port Jeff around 2:30 and were back on the dock in Stratford CT by 3:45. So my first Northeast spearfishing journey came up short, way short, having never actually got in the water but oh well; I did at least get to see a place I spent many a youthfull weekend at as a child for the first time in 12 years.

Welcome back to New England. Seas at BI should be 4-6 feet through the weekend. The rain should stop this afternoon though.
