Could someone give me the gist of NC's spearfishing regulations or point me to a web site? I looked through the whole 220-page pdf. file on coastal fishing regs for the state and could find anything about spearfishing. The only thing I did find was that there is now going to be a coastal fishing license (and wow $250 dollars for out of state  ). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,

I spoke with the NC DMF when I moved up here and asked what the regulations on spearfishing were. There is only one restricted species - red drum, and all other fish taken by spearfishing must adhere to the recreational size and catch limits. The coastal license doesn't take effect untill next year, so buy your license now and it should be less expensive. Good spearing.

No need to buy a license until next January when it takes effect.

The $250 is for a resident lifetime license. It'll be $500 for a non-resident!!! Or you can go with the $30 annual license for non-resident.
