Spearfishing on Florida’s east coast off Palm Beach and Jupiter can be challenging in the summer. Lately, decent groupers, hogfish and cobia have been few and far between. They are more prolific at other times of the year. ;)
So, my buddy Danny Jordan and I went deep this weekend in the 130-140 foot range. Not much on the bottom, we rose up from time to time and started picking off some nice kingfish. Blue water hunting on scuba! Instead of attacking from the top, we attack from the bottom! :D
Normally, we shoot kingfish on our deco stops around 20-30 feet, but this time the kings were running deeper in the 60-90 foot depth range. Here are a few video frames of the action.

Here are some views of the other side . I shoot at the middle trying to spine them because the flesh is so soft they shake sahfts easily.

Here I am with some kings and lady spearo buddies Maria (aka SB Maria O) and Bobbi (aka SB Waterbug). Diving was interesting--stagnant or south current--mixed viz--cold bottom. BUT, calm seas--good weather--few storms-- all made for a nice time. :D

Oh, yes, now I see you, thanks for mentioning, :-)
I wonder if they are harder to get on scuba.
We get our kings on drop offs, most of the time they are
swiming deep.
Just before dark or very early in the morning is a good time for the big ones.

So now, here is a little more of the story. My buddy Danny (aka SB AquaTech) spears this kingfish and I go over to see what's happening. As I approach, the king shakes his shaft and speeds on by me.

I engage the pursuit as I hate to see a fish go to waste. I pass up Kings that are closer to me so I can get the wounded king.

The video frames are shot at the rate of 30 frames in one second. Thus these three sequential frames of pulling the trigger are happening in one tenth of a second! I spined that king and brought it back to the boat.

The spearo ladies geared up. They drive boats, spear fish, catch lobsters, fillet fish, yank tails, and cook seafood with great enthusiasm. I am in heaven! :cowboy:

Another great day on the water Tony. Nice 'catches' :thumps: :graucho:
Is the blue shaft mounted to the left of your gun a pole spear? If so, does that slow your side to side movement on the gun while aiming?

Yes, that is a blue pole spear that I use to paralyze certain cobia, groupers, snappers, etc. that I failed to stone. I also use it for the inevitable fish that swims up right after I have shot my primary target fish. I have no problems with side to side movement. ;)

Very Interesting......Thanks for sharing Spearmax.
We have something similiar in my waters and also in Australia and we call them Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel and they are commercial species. Taste real good. I like it. It can grow very big, up to 90lbs and I have seen a photo of an incredible 200+ lbs in Terry Maas books. This fish is my prime target too and also on scuba but usually at 60-100 feet not deeper. Lightning fast acceleration but not an endurance fish.
Interresting video system you got, that is really cool and you can review your hunt like you are actually being there....Greatl stuff !!!!
