So I can grab one brand new with cover, for $143. Should I pull the trigger on this until I get my true rig gun? Of course I'll end up modding it with an open muzzle out of delrin, but wanted to get some opinions on this gun before hand.

Gulf Mag XHD makes a great rig gun. Killed many many fish with mine. Killed my big willy with a GM XHD. $143 is a great deal.

what is the PRACTICLE range of that gun...I shot a ling at about 15' with a Metal tech and didn't have enough punch to stick the barb. It hit him in the head, then pulled right out. Just after that, I got to shoot my 38 NW (way to big a shaft stock) and rigged a breakaway spear, but clipped my floatline to my gun....oops!

How much line is on that metal tec gun? My 60" Biller barley has 16' with 2 wraps. I just rigged it with 1 wrap after this weekend to see how I like it. I usually shoot fish at point blank range so I don't think that range is realy an issue for me. I would say get the biggest gun you can reach the bands to load without to much fuss. I started with the 48" Biller and traded it off after the first trip for the bigger gun. You can always just load 1 band for smaller fish.

Marcus....I'm a school teacher...so unless Mr.Wong has a educators discount, it's out of the question for quite a while. However I am going to be building a gun which will be suited more for me. I don't have a problem pulling the bands back, but I've got short arms so a gun too long isn't going to be practicle. The Omer Kevlar gun I shot had a single band but was easy enough to load. I just don't want to get something that I can't load because I cant get close to reaching the bands.

Generally speaking, Riffes have more power (or at least more trigger capacity) than JBL's.

Which MetalTech did you have, and how was it rigged? (bands, shaft size, cable, etc)

FWIW, Cobia have pretty thick skull plates. If you shoot a big one from a little distance in the head with an underpowered gun, well, you already know what happens. I've shot plenty of them in the head with my Riffe, and it has always put the tip on the other side of the fish, no matter where I hit it.

I've also seen a buddy of mine with a sawed off magnum come up with a 35 lb Cobia, point-blank belly shot, with the tip lodged inside the fish's abdomen. He was very lucky it didn't tear off.

Effective range on the Gulf Mag XHD is probably about 12' depending on the target. The 3/8" shaft is heavy and slows when you try to reach out. From 1'-10" They can do some serious damage. I rig mine with a single wrap of heavy SS cable.

Made a dive this year with a buddy that had a riffe. We each shot one AJ and one grouper. I also had 4 triggerfish. The re-load on a JBL is much faster than on a Riffe.
Put the shaft in, load one band and you can shoot.

If I were trophy or tournament diving, I'd want a Riffe or Wong. If I am diving for meat, I take the JBL.

JBL is also very effective when the vis gets poor. Close range they have the most knock down power.

I know some guys that have been rig diving for 20 years, and killed everything out there with JBLs.

good luck.

Yea, I know. My statement was one of sarcasm. I was just saying it before any of the Wong cult chimed in. ;)

It's odd that you say that...my JBL 38 special NW edition has a 3/8th shaft as well. I think I'm going to buy a riffe shaft which is thinner and use an open muzzle from blue water hunter. That way I can shoot a smaller shaft and have an open muzzle. My 38 special was working fine, but with my breath hold like it is now, I just can't get deep enough some times to take the shots I'd like to comfortably. My JBL has been a Jetty destroyers so far, but really felt HORRIBLE after shooting the metal tech, a Omer and a Wong!

Bug Power,
I like the JBL for meat fishing because the reload is so much faster. I can shoot 4 times to one with any other gun. When you get past 150' you have to work fast.

There is a big difference between a 38 special and a Gulf Mag XHD.

If you want an open muzzle freediving gun, look around at some euro's and others. They will serve you much better than a modified JBL. I have a Rob Allen 110 and a wong 55" reef. Both are much better freediving guns than any JBL.

My Rob Allen is for sale in member Items. Too many guns.
