View Full Version : Stingray handling

We came to the rig we were servicing last year and a recreational dive boat (private) was diving on the platform. They told us they'd just be a minute because they had tied a stingray off in order to return to the boat for air.

How does one handle a stingray in the water? I really like em and I've caught them on a line before, but I don't know that I'd want to tangle with one at depth.

Someone fill me in. Do you have to be crazy to spear one?

I am sure some of the HellDivers will chime in on this on. Cause these are the guys that have the best experience with the StingRays.

I've shot 3 or 4 at the jetties nothing huge, but maybe 20-40lbs With a spear through them they can't suck to the bottom too well, but will put up a pretty good fight. I simply drag them to the rocks or the shore where I can cut the barb and handle them appropriately.

Hopefully I'll have some pics after Thrusday.

We're going to these super secret rigs and see if the rays are home. It's usually a sandy bottom, 60' - 80', so you just shoot a hundred pound ray and let him drag you. When they get tired, you just yank on the cable and he'll crank it up again, it's a blast. It's like underwater skiing, you just got to make sure you look straight ahead so your mask doesn't fly off.

Louis, you crazy SOB, he wanted them for dinner, not transportation. Except I'm not sure which is crazier, riding them or eating them.

You don't have to be crazy to eat one either. Just hungry.

Rays are good eating if they are large enough to get meat off the under side. Try it.

You don't have to be crazy to shoot them, but it helps! But they are good eating.

You don't have to be crazy to shoot them, but it helps! But they are good eating. They taste like scollops...some dishonest restauranteurs punch them out of the ray wings with a biscuit cutter and charge you $12.00 a pound for "scollops".

Congrats, HH, on the baby boy. Sleeping thru the night yet? :D

Yes, our little hunter is sleeping almost all night. Wakes up a couple times to eat, then zonks back out. I have him practising loading speargun bands when he is awake!
Thanks for asking about him.....
