I snagged this tip from another forum here on Spearboard.com, but after playing with the program I tought I'd pass it along for those who don't read every forum on the board.
Googlearth is a visual image program that shows the earth from satellite pictures that have been processed to allow you to zoom in and view vehicle level resolution (1 meter resolution I think).
The cool part is the ability of anyone to write customized programs in order to display all kinds of data. In our case, some very nice folks have compiles a list of sites that displays through the Googlearth interface.
Three steps:
1. download and install googlearth. Try not to play with it too much immediately or you will get so distracted and not make it to step two. Go to earth.google.com
2. download the KMZ files. These are the data files that shows the fishing sites. They will install automatically into googlearth. Choose from several available at http://destinsharks.com/google-earth-marine-maps/
3. Browse till you drop.
I have two Florida files, the Emerald Coast Dive Sites and Pensacola Dive Sites in addition to the big Kahuna, the NOAA AWOIS database. The latter is a comprehensive listing of charted wrecks and servey information for NOAA's jurisdiction. That data is not flawless, but it has a ton of information that is correct. It provides survey date and results information, so you can kind of judge for yourself whether something is likely to still be there.
Thanks to those people who undertook this project. Seems like a lot of work to give out sites that a lot of people would normally keep to themselves.
Hope you folks find this useful. It's a powerful tool, the way of the future....
(Rumor has it that GOOG is buying Utube.com this weekend. Hope everyone bought stock over the last month's drop in price. :)
