North Coast Halibut Hunting

Does any know of any spots north of Bodega Bay where halibut would be found? I was thinking Humboldt Bay but not sure where to dive there. Thank you for your input.

Not much California Halibut action north of the Bodega/Tomales area.
However if you get up into Northern Mendocino County and try some places like Elk, Rockport, Noyo you may get a shot at a Pacific Halibut. Then up into Humbolt County you would be in what is considered to be the southern boundary for Pacific Halibut. There's a pretty reliable sportfishery out of Shelter Cove for them. They're not as big as the Alsaka fish but a lot of them are taken in the 100# range.

i was told by some guys i met one day at the Riffe Factory that were from Bodega Bay and they said that water viz on a good day is 8 feet. i asked them the same question, about spearing there, because i have seen some monster butts pulled from that area (on hooknline) and they said its not an easy task.

If you're a halibut diver then Bodega would be no problem for you. Beware "experts" at dive shops. They're mostly newbies and TRY to sound like they know what they're talking about.
Eight feet of visibility sounds like a good day to me for Bodega or Tomales. Sometimes you get better but then the water is usually cold and the fish move out.

Bodega/Tomales Bay from what little I know is all drift diving. Which is no problem if you have someone following in a boat. The reason I submitted this question is because I do a lot of abalone/ligcod/rockfish diving out of the Fort Bragg area. I was hoping that there was someone on this group who may have done some sort of pacific halibut (100+ pounds) hunting up there and could offer some insight. Who knows, maybe I'll be the first in this forum to try. Anyway, thank you all for your input and feel free to add to these threads. Take care.
