Well being I live on Maui and is the closet island to the big island, we got shook pretty hard but no serious damage on Maui and most of the other islands, the big island has some damage but no human damage. That was my first big earthquake and I though for sure the house was coming down, well I didnt think much of it after it was over and me and my girl went to check on our grandparents, and once everything was ok and they said no tsunami warning, I told her I was still diving and she looked at me like I was crazy, so it took some convincing and she won the argument. Even though it was 1hr after the quake and 90% of the state had no power, driving by the beach to my grandparents house I saw a lot of divers and fisherman, I guess they didnt see a threat either and figured that no ones in the water so what the hell, they probably did good.......well power is finally back on and everyone is ok, thanks for the concern, and if the water isnt too dirty from the quake I might try for an evening dive, Aloha.

Aw cmon, I like you guys, I think I make a great addition to this board with my personal views, and without you guys I would be nothing, besides its never personal, im sure if i met each and everyone of you guys, I would like 80% of you guys :thumps: ......but seriously thanks for the concern and the water looks "all bus", the southside has no waves but looks like a washing machine, the north shore looks like a lake with the kona winds but there is a small north swell, guys are killing it on the waves though, its the perfect glassy conditions, and I know the surfers wish the quake had gnerated more waves, but oh well good for us divers.

Wow! That was awesome! Right up there with going toe to toe with a big shark for getting your attention. I was in the Maui Pine warehouse and the entire building was swaying side to side.
MFD, had a chance at 3 mahis in the 20-30# range, but they were shy. Did get to do some boxing with a big shark at DD buoy, which is always entertaining.

Willie are you talking about today with the Mahis or friday? Thats to bad they stayed out of range, thats some nice sizes. Anyway I thought for sure buildings were going to crumble, thankfully it didnt though and everyone is ok, in fact I was suprised to see the smoke stacks still standing.

I was in Kona at a time share my mainland friends had. The rockin' and rollin' didn't wake me up, it was the 32" tv shattering the glass table! Also lost a bottle of vodka along with some dishes in the kitchen. Now the tv I can deal with because it wasn't mine, but the vodka.... The building had some damage to the elevators and the lobby area. We hit the road about an hour later heading home to Hilo. I think they closed the highway right after we passed. Rocks were everywhere from the landslides. Well I'm glad to be home in Hilo tonight. Now we have a cold front headed this way with lots of rain and lightning! I think someone must have pissed off Mother Nature!

Glad you are doing OK over there. I was on Guam when they got hit by
that 8.1 earthquake. I just stood in the doorway holding on as there was
nothing else you could do. Lucky it was deep and not centered on the
Island. The aftershocks are what bothered me after that especially when
the came in the middle of the night. No sleeping after that.

Friday. Forecast was for 10 knots. Yeah right, 10 knots my ass!
Nonetheless, a skunk day of bluewater diving beats working any day.
I guess now the shoreline will really be screwed up with this huge rain we're getting.

Well Rick looks you had a damn good day on friday, and the water looks good too. Right now its 8am and looks like it 8pm, its pouring rain and dark as hell. Well good to hear you hilo boys are doing good, and sorry to hear about your loss of a loved liquor, ive been there before, haha. Well I kind of wish I worked outdoors so my day would be rained out and I could go home, but oh well at least im making money. Willie is DD buoy the one out towards Hana? and I forgot to ask what kind of shark was bothering you? Yup the rain is sure going to f-up my shore dives for a while, might have to bring out the fishing poles.

Good to hear you guys are ok, and not to much damage. I just spoke to my uncle on Maui and he said you guys shook pretty good. Glad the quake didn't pop one of those volcanoes open. That Spreckels guy made a sugar processing plant over here, just south of Monterey Bay, that is almost a twin to the plant on Maui. Tree lined road and so on. It stood up through the big quake we had here in 89. I guess he did something right. Best to you guys, hope things get back to normal soon.

Yeah im glad those old ass smoke stacks stayed up, of course for the fact that our HC&S peoples can still make sugar ;) , but more importantly, that is the easiest and quickest way to determine the wind situation......I know the trees tell the story too but nothing beats the smoke stacks, they never lie.

yeah we got a pair of stacks set right in between Santa Cruz and Monterey. On a clear day you can get the truth and save yourself a thirty minute drive to onshore slop.

DD is about 8 miles out of Maliko. Q is outside of that, then HO off of Keanae, then FF (f'ing far) is way outside of Hana.
DD doesn't have the best rep (nickname is double dead), but it's been good to us... many mahis speared there.
The shark is those pointy nosed beady eyed brown ones all over the Kona buoys. Not a blue shark, saw a big one of those off F in Kona. You should of seen him hang right under the boat..... waiting.
