Hey,
I am from Florida and will be coming to Maui next week. I have family that lives there in Napilli and want to maybe try a couple of free-dives from shore. I might even go to backside of Lanaii with a family friend. But if I want to do a shore dive where is an ok spot? I heard a family member was going to take me to Windmills to try for lobster, other than that I am not sure. I shoot an Islander Riffe, and have been free-diving for years, begginer spots are ok, but I am looking for bigger fish!. I also heard you guys have pretty big surf right now, will that effect most spots? Thanks you guys.

The north shore is ugly, and will remain ugly for the winter season, unless we get lucky, you’ll be in napili so the water should be fairly nice, they haven’t predicted any swells for the west shores, although north shore can wrap to that side sometimes. Unless you swim out deep your Riffe Islander will destroy the reef fishes, our delicious reef fish don’t get that big, but that don’t mean there dumb, good luck. Look at the dlnr website for seasons, size limits and marine reserves. You can go to honolua bay, the inside is a reserve but outside the points is not when you walk down the cliff read the signs and they will tell you where you can’t go, the average depth out there is 50-60ft so if you have a good bottom time you can shoot some nice game. The secret to reef diving is laying on the reef as long as you can and throw sand up, and scratch rocks. You can also check out flemmings beach, and s-turns, although s-turns is known for tiger sharks, when it holds fish it can hold fish and plenty of tako. I would also suggest driving from napili around towards kahaukuloa its all cliffs but there are some good spots if the water is nice. Good luck.
