We wrap him in a warm blanket and rush him to the PETA hospital! If they are not successful in saving him they perform a
"Filet & Release" service for him free of charge.

I think the important point here, and you guys will agree, that I have never been around people that intentionally shoot short fish. I just want to make that point for all of us, because you have to worry about PETA or some other group taking things out of context. The incidences of short fish come down considerably the more you shoot.
Having said that, I bandage them in a trauma dressing, give them an IV of Ringers lactate, shock them with the paddles if necessary, and then return them from whence they came.

I have three marks on my gun, one at 12",24" & 36". That way I can check my fish under water. So I never "come up" with an undersized fish.:D Like Scott said the more you spear the better you get. Just don't shoot marginal fish, save your shot for the ones you know are legal.

Good point Scott. One way or the other it gos back in to the food chain , some thing eats it. I'am sure that no one here makes it a habit of taking shorts .

I had to look the other way on this one as the diver REALLY thought it way of legal length and it was about a 1/3rd inch short. He is new to spearfishing and now knows only to shoot fish well over the limit. Spear and release is NOT an option. I would have to say it is safe to assume all of use spearfishing have at one time stuck an undersized fish. But to not learn from that is a pathetic waste.
Stick 'em good!!

I don't shoot shorts, but if I did by accident, I would take it home, and nurse it with care. Sponge baths in lemon juice and italian dressing. Rest in a bed of onions and peppers. And when it feels nice and healthy again, I turn it loose back into the water and then flush the toilet to its freedom.
