This is clearly the wrost I've heard. It was for a democrat, running for a lousy county comission seat in Fulton County, GA. Anyone heard a worse one?
edit- the mp3 was of 3 other ads, not the one in question. If I can find it online I'll post a new link.
The text of it:
"This is Congressman John Lewis."
"And I'm Mayor Shirley Franklin"
"And I'm Andy Young"
(John Lewis) "On November 7th we face the most dangerous situation we ever have. If you think fighting off dogs and water hoses in the sixties was bad, imagine if we sit idly by and let the right-wing Republicans take control of the Fulton County Commission."
(Shirley Franklin) "The efforts of Martin and Coretta King, Hosea Williams, Maynard Jackson and many others will be lost. That's why we must stand up and we must turn out the vote for the Democrats on Election Day."
(Andy Young) "And especially for John Eaves for Fulton County Commission Chairman. Unless you want them to turn back the clock on equal rights and human rights and economic opportunity for all of us, vote for John Eaves as Fulton County Chairman"
(Lewis) "Your very life may depend on it."
(John Eaves) "This message paid for by the committee to elect John Eaves."

I dunno yet.
FWIW, the comissioner he was trying to beat is a republican & held the seat for eyars, but I'm unaware of an lynchings as a result.

Whether or not what they said about the Republican was true, at least it was direct and out in the open. There wasn't any sneaky "call me Harold" stuff. They said that letting right wing Republicans take control of the County Commission would be bad for blacks. Right or wrong, at least its something that can be met directly by the other side and debated.

I was pretty sure you'd find a way to pass on it, Bill. My points about the double standard stand: A dem can say any damn thing he wants & it's OK, a republican can't say anything without it being vile, despicable & not to be tolerated.

I can't open the actual .mp3. However, what is racist about the text? I am having a hard time picking it out??? Other than the scare tactic that "your life may depend on it????" Seriously, is there something I'm missing?
THe only thing I can see is the ridiculous notion that letting a republican have control of a political seat will reverse 50 years of progression over racism. That is ridiculous.

All 3 of the speakers are black democrats.
If you don't want to call it racist, race-baiting at least is appropriate.

I'm fine today. I happen to live on the AL-GA line, so I got to hear this ad. Seeing as how the media never brought this up, compared to national coverage of the republican ads, I just thought I'd share it with everyone.

I only read the text but where did your comment about a lynching come from? From the text it sounds like hard politics, just becuase the 3 were black how is it racist, if they were 3 white guys it wouldn't be.

The lynching comment is mine. It's a response to this line from the ad:
(Lewis) "Your very life may depend on it."
Sorry, but if the current GOP commissioner has been rolling back civil rights & killing people in Fulton county, it's a closely held secret.

LIke I said it sounds to me more like hardball politics than racism

The dems were black, the opponent white. Somehow if he won we'd be going back to the beatings & such of the 60's, the Kings work would be rolled back etc etc etc. There is not a single person I know who heard it that did not walk away disgusted by the blatant racist bigotry in it.
It was an open effort to make black voters deathly afraid of a white politician.

If that is the case then it was wrong

Sorry to have confirmed your suspicions about me, but I think there is a basic difference between appealing to race and saying that a candidate will roll back progress versus a veiled hint that electing a black to the Senate will put white women in danger from blacks.

No different than George HW Bush (Sr.) running ads against Dukakis with image of Willie Horton (black convict) to scare white voters into voting against Dukakis.
It's just hard politics played by professional crooks--aka. politicians--Democrats and Republicans alike.

Zen, did you know that the man who wrote the Willie Horton ads did not even know Willie was black until he saw the final video?
He wrote an ad attacking Dukakis for allowing Horton out on a weekend furlow, during which he commited more violent crime. He had all the relevant facts of the matter to write it, but never even saw a picture of Horton while doing the work.

I find that hard to believe in light of Lee Atwaters apology for the ad when he was dying from a brain tumor.

He wrote an article recently & discussed it. If I can find it again I'll post it.

I heard some more discussion on this ad today on a station out of Atlanta. The guy won the seat. The 3 people in the ad also have a history of making racial & religious based slurs, so this is nothing new.

I only know that Lee Atwater apologized fo rusing the Willie Horton ad against Dukakis, why would he apologize if it wasn't something he was ashamed of. He was the cheif campaign strategist for Bush so any ads would have gone through him.

He may have made the decision to use it, but this guy reported that he actually wrote the damned thing. This was a recent article, he was discussing the ad in TN. Within the last 2 weeks. So far I can't recall where I read it & one site that it may have been on, the search engine has quit working. It returns error messages right now.
