Me and my wife will be moving up that way (Raleigh) in a few weeks. I imagine the water is probably starting to cool off pretty good, but if anyone needs a diver let me know. Is it shut down for the winter or are ya'll still hitting the water?

You can dive out of/around Morehead on Christmas day if you want...further north (wrecks that are way out of the stream) it doesn't usually feel so good w/out a drysuit.

Hey Junior,

I'm FL transplant too. Although I'm in deer mode right now, I am still planning on hitting the water at least one more time before Christmas and a bunch during the new year (after I get my new wetsuit). It's pretty darn cold in my 3mm, but I can handle it if the temps stay put for a little while. I'm in Greenville, so if you wanted to do some shore diving, I'm on the way. PM if you want to go sometime. There should still be fish around for a few, maybe several weeks - two weeks ago there were still tropicals in the inshore waters. Even after that the tautogs should still be around. Good luck with the move.

Check out www.ncdivers.com . We have a good discussion board, and it's a very active group for both diving and socializing. Not too many spearos (yet), but I'm trying to change that.

What's the water temp going to be like around christmas time? I'm bringing a boat up with me and weather permitting can hit anything within 30-40 miles of shore. Let's go.

Thanks for the link bigwhitesquare. Anyone know what the H&L bluefin situation is looking like right now BTW? Licking my chops...:D

Water temps in the 60's. Best to dive in the Morehead City or Wilmington areas this time of year, where we get more gulfstream water. Almost all spearing here is on scuba somewhat offshore, either on ledges or wrecks. Very few decent shore diving sites.

Bluefin? I have no clue, sorry.

The bluefin bite hasn't started yet this year. We haven't had any real cold weather yet to start moving the fish south. Maybe this Nor'easter we're getting now will start them moving.
The offshore water is still around the mid to low 70's.
This site will give you a pretty good idea of what it's like at the inshore and offshore buoys. www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Southeast.shtml

AAaaaah, Raleigh, NC...Liberal vortex of the carolinas... :D

You'll like it there.

I personally hate hoods, but they'll be a necessity pretty soon. As it turns out, grouper get slower/stupider (is that a word?) this time of year.

If only we could get the weather to cooperate with days off, it'd be downright beautiful.

Good luck with the move!

We have a fair amount of spearing and lobstering down here in Wilmington. I'll plug my buddies website, it shows a little bit of what we get. www.wilmingtonspearfishing.com

 Guess that's what happens when you throw four or five institutions of higher learning into a small area:D

Paul - Yep, new job and I've got a lot of family in the area, which made it an easier decision to move. But, I plan on coming back for the SBO and SPO next year.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I may need to step up to a 5 or 7 mil semi dry suit if I want to dive in the winter. I've rarely been in the water down here past 55 degrees with a 3 mil...and that was a little cold:D

Tom - How far are you from Raleigh? I'm coming down to stock up on meg teeth and 20 pound hogfish soon as I get settled in!! :thumps:

I don't know any up to date reports, but there are stories of people hooked up with a nice seatrout at the Lookout rock jetty only to be spooled in a split second by a hungry bluefin.

By the way, with a 30-40 mile range, it seems that people are going to be asking to go with you instead of the other way around. Best of luck in NC.

Junior-

I am still trying to get some info on the Raleigh soccer scene. I am 1hr away, but we have numerous leagues here. I haven't forgotten about it, but two of my calls to the Raleigh crew have gone unanswered. When you get up this way, let me know. All my buddies are still in Wilmington and we go whenever we get a chance. Good mix of guys, both scuba and freediving. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the diving. Shoot me a PM w/ your email and I'll give you a head start on collecting numbers.

About 20 Bluefin were weighed in last Tuesday.

They have been catchin them for about a month. Season is a little slow this year....much like last year.

Welcome Junior. The water inshore is super clear right now in ILM but cold and no fish. I'm sure you'll have some takers for offshore trips though.
Good luck and Happy Holidays.

Doug,
Sorry to see you and Renee & Jr go. My brother lives in Wilson and he is the guy in the striped shirt in the picture. I sure would like to go out from NC spearing _ was NAWI certified at ECU and dove my first dive from my own boat on the liberty ship out of Morehead. I am looking for a way to add diving to my home trips so it will be great to dive with a diving buddy I know. By bro has contacts over the state so let me know if you need any help except he is not a sea guy - gets seasick.

Will

PS: Just remember that you moving to the place that elected Jessie Helms and John East (who by the way was brain dead his last term)

Thanks for the update fellas. Will, anytime you are in town let me know and we will make some plans. Marcus has my boat in Florida for now and he and another friend are going to bring it up in March. Once I get my shyt together, sell my house in St. Pete and buy a house here and get settled in I am going to be all over some of this fine NC spearfishing and fishing.

I will definately be looking for local people to shoot with once I get it all together.
