Got a nice surprise at the Veterans Reef today...found a gun! Not in too bad shape at all.
If any of y'all lost one out there post something identifying it (there are some positive IDs for this one so don't try to weasle it!)

I HOPE IT'S MY GUN! The gun I lost (w. John Hermes as my witness), is a 48" Sea Hornet "SS" Rhino with no spare shaft. Also, there was no line on my gun, as I had removed it.

It just dawned on my that you probably found it "on the reef" (i.e., at the bottom). We'll, my gun was a floater. Damn!

Scott...sorry, this one wasn't your Rhino...

Thanks, anyway. If you find the owner, they should buy you a case of your favorite brand for coming forward with the gun.

I know a 12 year old boy who lost a 48" Yellow Rhino Classic the first time they took it out. Any chance?

I know it's a long shot but I lost a teak gun about three weeks ago off crystal river. No shaft, lead epoxied in the handle and amber and black band.
thanks

if you do not find the owner whats your plan to do with the gun?

I vote you send it to me, let me tune it up and give it to that 12 year old kid. I'll donate whatever it needs to get it up to shootin condition. Depending on the manufacturer and if I can get the parts!

Sea Hornet with a lead filled handle and a spare shaft (Biller holder). There is an identifying marking both on the stock and on the handle. No line.
It does not appear to have been under water for long at all since there are no barnacles or any other funk growing on it, but it is not in the best condition...needs to be sanded and re-coated.
If I don't find the owner, I'll probably keep it for gunless friends to use when we go out.
Spear One, how the heck did someone lose one of those bright yelow guns?! Wow!

The boy and his father were on their first dive and the father accidently let go of the gun. It floated to the surface and they slowly followed making a safe ascent.
When they got to the surface there was another boat only 20 yards or so away. They got in the boat and looked around for the gun. It was slick calm and that gun was bright yellow so it would have been visable from a long distance.
Not seeing the gun from where they were, they threw a wad of paper in the water to get a drift direction and pulled the anchor to begin searching. They looked for over an hour without success. They asked the other boat if they had seen the gun but they said no.
There is no way they shouldn't have foung that gun. The conditions were perfect and that gun would have stuck out like a neon sign. The father surmised that the other boat had found the gun as soon as it hit the surface and simply refused to give it back. I tend to agree given the story I was told.
That father and son were at my last seminar at Mac's and I actually brought him up front and used him as an example to show that even a small 12 year old could load a 48" gun, which they ended up purchasing. I'm sure that boy was very upset upon losing that gun, especially if those guys in that other boat stole it!

From what you’ve relayed, sounds a bit fishy to me, too. If seas were calm and they noticed it missing fairly soon, they probably would have found it.
Seriously, if I was diving and found a gun without another boat in sight, then hooray for me, Christmas came early. But if the owner shows up looking for it, either on the water or even here on the board, it’s just not cool to keep it.

A buddy of mine lost his gun a few weeks ago off Port Richey..a 48" biller with Yellow bands and a 357 powerhead with spent shell.

Sounds like the kid needs the gun alot more than you . The boy got ripped off from the sound of it. This is your chance to make it right ( not that its any of your doing)but all the same . You might make a friend for life shit you might make a differance in this kids life, think about it .
Who here would not spend $5.00 to see a kid smile from ear to ear . Would any of you chip-in to see this kid out shooting fish .
Come on you guys help me out here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Besides the fact the kids daddy will probably spend a ton of money at YOUR shop! Come on Geaux, give the kid a break and let Kevin fix the gun and give it to him.

Let's not be too hard on GeauxSaints. At least he took steps to find the rightful owner. Is the kid indigent? I mean, if the kid's dad is loaded, then why should GS have to give up his treasure trove? :D

I talked to Geaux Saints and he said the wood on the gun was not in very good shape. I would be reluctant to give Travis a gun which was not in good shape.
If the Spearboard members are feeling philanthropic, why don't we all chip in $5 each and we will give it to him at the Mac's seminar. They bought the first gun at Mac's.I will donate the labor and give Travis and his dad each a Rhino T-shirt plus some slingin steel decals.
I had planned on talking to the guys at Mac's about giving him a good deal onother gun but if the spearboard members are willing to chip in this sounds like a better way.
I really felt bad for the kid, especially because of the way it went down. They should have been able to locate that gun very easily in flat calm seas.
Lets hear it..... Time is short the seminar is next Thursday.

I'll throw in $5, no problem.
But I have to pose the question; if the boy's dad lost his gun, shouldn't the boy's dad be replacing it? If I lost someone's gun, you're damn sure I would be!

They were diving together and his dad had him out for his first open water dive. Travis was not ready to use the gun himself yet.
I am going to make a couple calls today and make sure that they didn't already replace the gun. But keep the pledges coming and I will find out for sure.

I have to tell you, my gun fell off the boat and my dive partner found it about 30 minutes later on our next dive. I didn't pay him anything (although I probably owe him at least a 6 pack).
In the meantime, I figure I owe it to this kid to kick in towards a new gun if he needs one, I gotta get right with the "Gods" of the sea for giving mine back. Plus, I would gladly contribute to having a young kid get involved in killin' stuff.
For what it's worth, his pop should take him out a couple dozen times before even bringing a gun along. I am sure diving at 12 is scary enough without adding pressure of spearguns and stuff.
If they still need a gun, count me in for $10.

Well, my point of view remains. But I'll help the kid get a new gun regardless.

First off...I WORK in a dive shop, I don't own a dive shop.
Second, like Spear One said, the gun is OLD and will take considerable reconditioning to make it usable, including shortening it, significantly.
Holy shit, I try to post something for someone to get THEIR gun back and y'all give me flak about wanting me to give it to someone I've never met?

If you got that impression from any of my posts, I apologize, but I wasn’t even thinking of you when I posted. Personally, I think giving it to the kid rather than keeping it for yourself is admirable.

I don't think Geaux Saints deserves to get his stones busted about this, he did nothing wrong. I commend him for even offering to return the gun in the first place.
Thanks for the pledges guys. I was out of town all day Friday and was unable to get hold of the kids dad but I will try again over the weekend. I will post a way to send the donations as soon as I determine there is a need.
PS,
When we were out in Vegas for DEMA we were having a three day losing streak when we passed this homeless guy begging for donations. I figured what the hell, I needed to do something to change my luck so I dropped some change in his cup as we passed by.
An hour later on our very next gambling session we started winning. We won four days straight after that. Would any of you guys like to shoot a 50lb plus Gag like dubble's? Any of you guys need to change you luck?

When I was a kid....I would BEG my big bro to take me "gigging" (spearguns were for rich kids). I'll never forget poking big sheeps, flounder and even Snook (I did'nt know it was illegal in 69'!).
If the ol' man can't afford to replace the gun we need to do it.
Just my 2 cents.

I am in. Please let me know where to send the check. I am in Colorado so I wont make the meeting.
Whether the kids dad can afford it or not it seems that doing something good for a kid especially this time of year is the most important thing. This gun will mean more to this kid than any gun his dad could every buy him.

I remember when I was a kid I always wished Santa would bring me a new Rhino and maybe a 31' Fountain with twin 250 Yammy's and a voluptuous brunette. Prick never listened.
I've been avoiding this thread once I realized it might cost me something.........but, since nobody knows where I live I'll chip in...........if it's tax deductible and I win the dive trip on the Jolly Rogers that I didn't win last night..............did you ever notice how tight us spearfishermen are.........OK OK OK, I'll help out too, now that I've extracted my moneys worth out of you guys!!!!!!!
