I'm getting sick of the bloated realestate prices in South Florida and am looking at possible states to relocate to. Texas and NC are on the top of my list.
I was curious, Here we have 3 reef lines running about 30 miles North to South and about 300 yards off shore. FreeDiving is very easy to do in Southern Florida.
Are they many areas to Freedive Shallow (within 70 feet)?

Are there Reeflines like we have here?

I would appreciate any feedback.
Sincerely,
Rinaldo

PS: I grew up in McAllen,TX. I know what I'm getting myself into :cowboy:

they are putting in an artificial reef inside of 9nm around the Houston Area. Other then that there are some wrecks and a few rock outcropings, but as far as reefs go, you'll be diving rigs like most of us.

There have been several reports here on this board of freedivers being successful at the rigs. I've talked with quite a few myself here in Houston. Rig diving is a bast dude. For me, it turns the volume down on all other diving. I lived in Jax for two years, and miss Florida waters a lot. If I lived there now, I'd still come back from time to time to get back under the rigs.

There aren't any reefs to hunt here. You can't hunt the Flower Gardens. I believe Stetson is off limits to spearing now too, but you'd be diving to 90fsw in those places anyway.

There's plenty of hunting to be had here, you just have to pay the gas bill that goes along with it.

Freediving is excellent here. You can ask Asturven about that. He put more fish in the boat then the Scuba divers. Also, you don't have to rig dive. There are reefs and structure out there. Most of the rigs will be dismantled soon I hear.

Ha, ha... well I lived in McAllen when I started work in the oilfield after graduating from college. Didn't get to do any diving anywhere while there, but now I live in the Houston area and dive offshore with some of the Texas guys (both "free" and SCUBA) on the board. We have fun and usually can put something in the freezer. It's not like having reefs within swimming distance from shore, but we make do ok! Give me a shout when you get moved over here! :)

Comment... If I were making a decent living in Florida... I'd probably take advantage of the diving there until I couldn't stand it any more... ;) If you don't own a house now... that might make a difference.
