I want to get radar for my boat. Im just looking for something that is basic and will let me know where other boats are if fog were to happen to roll in. I don't need anything fancy. What would you gouys recommend.

since your not looking for birds or nothing like that a basic dome radar would be suffecient. 4kw will be sufficient for your applications, maybe alittle overkill too.. its basically the $ you would like to drop as radars can get way up in price. dont waste your $ on an open array as those are more for birds. also for the dome the higher kw the further you can get and better dipiction at a closer range.

For close range navigation on a smaller boat, a ~2kw dome combo would be plenty. If you had any systems that could accommodate radar input you could just add the dome, if not you can get a screen/dome combo. Furuno and JRC have affordable units available that would get the job done for you. The Furuno 1623 (2.2kw, 16nm range) could be a good unit for your needs. JRC's comparable units are the 1000 (1.5kw w/ 12" dome) and 1500 (2kw w/ 18"dome). All of the units sell for about $1000. They are priceless running in the fog and at night.
