Lets give a standing ovation for the Dixie Chicks who had the courage, the guts, the spirit to speak the truth and pay the price.

If the Judith Millers of the world were the Dixie Chicks, perhaps America would not have gone to war.

If the editorial writers of the Washington Post were the Dixie Chicks, perhaps America would not have gone to war.

If Republicans in Congress in 2002 were the Dixie Chicks, if Democrats in Congress in 2002 were the Dixie Chicks, if the Vice President and Secretary of Defense in 2002 were the Dixie Chicks, many Gold Star mothers would be spending this holiday season with their sons and daughters, and our fallen heroes.

The Dixie Chicks spoke the truth, took the risk, paid the price, and did what they believed was the patriotic thing. They did the hard thing, and turned out to be right, when so many others did the easy thing, and turned out to be wrong.

Thank you, Dixie Chicks.

Yeah, I remember they were piled on by every flag-waving Tom, Dick, and Harry out there.

I didn't think they accord the appropriate amount of respect to the Office of the Presidency during a time of great turmoil, given that they were on foreign soil.

I still feel that way. May be I'm old fashioned. I suppose I would feel more at ease if they had slammed Bush while on US soil. I wouldn't have cared then.

But...irrespective of how I feel about the amount of respect they gave to the Presidency Office, they were right about the dufus occupying that office.

And they didn't back down, that's for damn sure. A feisty bunch. Too bad I don't like country music.

+1. Shania Twain, on the other hand, I would hit like Scarface would hit a line of coke. Fast and with instant gratification...twice :thumps:

Bill, pardon my ignorance, but what is a Gold Star mother? I'm guessing it is the mother of someone who died in the service, but am unsure if it is that or a mother of someone currently in service.

I am not a great country music fan, but when they had the guts to speak the truth I bought all of their albums just to support them.

Yes. Actually, I think the term was first used in WWII, but I'm not sure.

I don't listen to country music either, but when they did their big come-back album a while back, I bought it just to show support. I don't think I've gotten around to listening to it though.

Zenspearo- when the Chicks came up in another thread a couple of months ago, a lot of people had the same problem you did- they shouldn't have spoken out while outside the US. Maybe I travel too much, but somehow that doesn't mean anything to me. If that is the way someone feels and its the right time to say it, I don't care whether they are in London or New York. I've sure expressed my opinion of my President while overseas. The only difference was that they didn't give me a stage and a mike.

Also, I am not sure how to differentiate between respect for the office and respect for the office-holder. If I think he's an idiot, do I have to wait until he is out of office before saying so?

The Dixie Chick's can say whatever they want to, wherever they want to, if someone gives them shit about, isn't it their right?

The same as it is the right of the Dixie Chicks to run their mouth.

If they happen to lose a bunch of money on concerts and Cd's isn't that their problem?

Yeah Bret, you are right.

That doesn't keep me from being sad that the entire episode exposed the hatefulness and ignorance of a bunch of rednecks who threatened them with death for speaking out, but it is the reality of human nature whether I like it or not.

I don't know whether they realized what they were getting into or not, but I'm proud of them.

If there were death threats made against them, the people making them should be prosecuted, don't you think?

Yes, but they didn't leave their names and addresses. They were cowards, just like most people who make death threats.

I might be mistaken but I don't think it was all of the Dixie Chicks but rather it was Little Miss Maines. Being from the Lubbock area I was up there a few weeks after she made the statement and I ran into one of her uncles. I asked him what he thoult about her saying the stuff about President Bush. His comment was that she needs to learn to keep her mouth shut.

Quick history lesson:

Starting at least by WWII and maybe before, it was common for families with a member serving overseas to hang a small red, white and blue shield in their window with a single blue star on it for each person serving. If that person were to be killed in action, the blue star would be replaced with one made of gold. An organization was later created for "Gold Star Mothers" those being Moms who had lost a child in combat.

In a 60 Minutes piece on it, they seemed to go along with it. Maybe she actually consulted with them before she said she was ashamed Bush was from Texas. And maybe they don't give a shit what her uncle thinks.

In any event, quoting from my first post

The Dixie Chicks spoke the truth, took the risk, paid the price, and did what they believed was the patriotic thing. They did the hard thing, and turned out to be right, when so many others did the easy thing, and turned out to be wrong.

yes they spoke, now they are pissed that the people who bought their records and paid big bucks to attend their shows spoke also...
had they known the consequences, they would have never, ever uttered those words...
I had their first CD and loved it, they are some very talented dumbasses
I'm glad that you are proud of them though

Yeah isnt it great that they are portrayed as victims in this whole fiasco. I must be violating their right to free speech by exercising my right to free speech and not buying their records.

I agree. If they knew the consiqueces they would have never done it. She was playing to the crowd at the time, telling them what she thought they wanted to hear. If they had been playing a concert in Houston at that time, would she have said it? I think not.

Bill McIntyre

If the free speech had been limited to avoiding buying their records, they wouldn't look like victims. Seeing film of snarling assholes calling them names, saying they were not Americans and should be deported, etc. and of course seeing pictures of crude death threats made them look much more sympathetic.

I too doubt she would have said it in Houston. After all, she doesn't have a death wish.

Just curious, is it what they said that upset some of you or is it where they said it? Since I don't care for their music I haven't followed them that much. Can't see why people are upset cause a bunch of girls said the president was an idiot, people have been calling our presidents idiots since we elected the first one and usually they are pretty much on the mark.

Bill, as proud as you are of the Dixie Chicks are you equally disgusted by the hippie hollywood crowd that vowed to leave the country if Bush won the election and then decided to stay after all? Why do we value so much what our ENTERTAINERS do/think/say/support/ect? Most didnt go to college, many didnt fishish high school but I am supposed to respect their athoritative views on politics?

Bill McIntyre

As far as guidance for what I should think, I don't care about the opinions of entertainers at all.

I guess you could say I'm just glad when they happen to agree with me because they have a large audience and I don't.

Someone had to be the first to say publicly that the Emperor had no clothes, and even if they pissed off a lot of their own fans, at least they got the message out that it was OK to oppose Bush if you had the balls and were willing to pay the price.
