Guys,
This will be my second trip to Costa Rica ever since I joined one of the big banana companies three weeks ago. I will be spending a week for work but would like to come in a weekend earlier or leave a weekend after so I could explore and do some freediving. I will be flying into San Jose so I a was wondering about a good spot closer to SJ this time. Not looking for fancy hotel but would like to find a boatman willing to take me out. Within reason, money is not a problem. Any recommendations??
Tks,
Wahooooo!

Try finding a boat in Herradura bay near Jaco. There is bluewater action not far out and closen in reefs that you won't be able to dive if there is any surf. Quepos further south has a large sportfishing community so many boats. The northwest corner (Islas Murcielagos, Flamingo bay, Playas del coco......) but farther away. A lot of reef dives on the Carribean side (Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Manzanillo) but more crime.....

playa herradura has two italian guys that run the dive shop right up the road from the beach. they have a 26ft panga boat and they like to shoot fish also. hunt down nicolas and i forget the other guys name. both of them are very friendly and love to hunt fish and cook them up afterwards.

Thanks for the tips guys. What can you tell me about the Manuel Antoni National Park? Are there any restrictions inside of the park? I mean, is it like here in the US that you can't get close with a speargun? Also, how's the viz in these waters?

Pretty sure you can't spear in the immediate area of the park, you cant fish h&l from the park. There are two little rock islands straight out from the beach in MA that looked promising, I kayaked around them last year when I was there and saw a lot of life. I think I'm going back down myself next month, dont know if I'll do any spearing though.Theres a good place to stay up on top of the hill between Quepos and MA, called vista serena, talk to Conrad there its a great place.
