but we give it to them anyway.
I heard a really disgusting thing on NPR. They went back to check on an Iraq vet that they had found living in his car a year ago. The guy had suffered serious injuries and had part of his spine replaced, but the VA was giving him $200 something per month in disability.
After they did a feature on him after that first interview, the VA miraculously and coincidentally tripled his benefit. Then CNN did a feature on him, and the benefit went to over $2600 per month.
While its nice for him that he got noticed, NPR and CNN can't do a feature on every wounded vet. How many of them are getting screwed and no one notices?

It goes both ways. I know a couple dudes who are totally healthy, mentally and physically IMO and they are sucking about the same amount of taxpayer dollars every month. Hell, one of them (who claims he is too mentally f**ked up to hold a job) is applying for his pilots liscence. So... this person can fly a plane, but they can't hold a job. Hmmm. Sounds fishy to me.

Magabeast,
I would be naive if I didn't think some people were trying to work the system.
But I'm also idealistic enough to want the system to sort out the ****offs from the needy, and pay them accordingly.
If you don't deserve it, you shouldn't get it.
But if you deserve it, it shouldn't take NPR or CNN to get it for you.

I'm with you Bill.My family is full of vets disabled and not.It is pathetic what both parties have done to **** them over.
Guaranteed SS+COLAs for every dirtbag who lives to 62 or over along with prescription drug coverage while phasing out care for vets.Add this to diability for addiction, alcoholism, and ****ing lard-asses who eat too much.Hell after a couple of car wrecks I was given a partial disability rating because that's how the system works.
The system is fraught with abuse so bureaucratic asswipe pinhead flunkies almost arbitrarily make spot determinations without any sort of later accountability because they are the worst kind of tenured union deadbeats...civil servants.IMO heroes come first and trough feeders should come last whether they be pork projects or welfare recipients.

If you know this as a fact then you really should report it to the authorities...or the FAA.
