I'm thinking of buying plans and building a kit Panga....I'd buy one if I can find a LIGHT panga for the same price. The stitch and glue pangas seem to be VERY light and hold up well. I'm thinking of a 22-28' boat to take 4 or 5 divers to the rigs (20-30miles max) and back. I'm looking to power with dual 45's or 50's enclosing the trasome so that water stays out. Something like this..

yeah i've seen that boat, and is one of the reasons I'm looking for one. However if you look at the boat above the freeboard is a bit higher, a big plus when heading out to the rigs. you have to remember these boats are filled with foam and are unsinkable. If you basically don't swamp the motors and build a lower transom to drain if something comes over the freeboard. It's self bailing, but the scupper holes don't drain fast enough if you take a big one over the bow. the wood stitch and glue boats are pretty light. I know a few fellows said that you could get a bare 22 or 25' panga for about 6.5 new.

I built a GF-12 from Bateau 4 years ago and am currently building an OB-19. The plans and service from them are first-rate.
I saw one of their 20' pangas at the last builder's rendez-vous. For their length, they're a lot smaller than a "typical" boat. I'd go for the 25', the 22' would probably be cramped for 4 divers.

How about we build a couple orca 17's for practice?

I have fished out of a 27 panga. It was underpowered with a 40 yamaha, but still planed with 5 guys in it. They are designed for heavy loads utilizing low power. They are shallow draft but will take rough seas. There is a dealer in Matamoros. I have all the info if you are interested. Im rigging one this summer for rig diving. Bare hulls are 6 - 7 thousand.

Hey Mitch, shoot me an email would ya? mjmyers2@earthlink.net
Just went to the Houston boat show today and liked the Panga they had on show there, but gasped at the price. I would like the info for the dealer South of the border. Might have to hit them up if I can make it down to TIFT this year.

Mitch let me know. Depending on the size. I've calulated the cost of making my own boat and it's looking about $4,000 for a bare 22' plus my labor. $5,700 for a 25' boat. There are plans for a 28' boat on the board, but not up yet. I'm building 3 fs12's in my class. Mentirosos if you'd like to take a day and help me do them with my students your more then welcome. I also have plans for some canoes. I just didn't have the cash to play around with boats I don't need. I have a 16' skiff so I didn't need a flatbottom boat. I could use a panga that would draft 8-12" yet, but able to handle 3-5's offshore. I was impressed with them in Belize when I went. I'd like to get a hull that I can outfit with twin 50's

You can always deal directly with Karol Duran Prada at Eduardono.I think she is responsible for international sales . If their is already a distributor of their boats in the USA perhaps they are not allowed to sell directly to you. The last quote I had on a bare 25 foot panga was about $4500 us .

If you want her direct number, let me know and I will search for it. Atleast you have an idea of the mark up now. Those boats are made in Medellin Columbia. The commercial pangas are something like $14,000 us for about a 31 footer. The commercial ones must be the pangas used for drug running. How convenient ....Medellin and a boat manufacturer that makes a popular drug running boat in those parts. There were great pictures on SB with a panga with a a whole bunch of 55 gallon drums full of fuel caught by Coast Guard. Pictures were takenm from a helicopter. The pictures are no longer accessible.

you guys keep an eye out for a 100hp motor for me! I'd rather put twin 50's on it though.

Hey Bug, I take it you have considerable experience in boatbuilding. What kind of shop setup and experience do you recommend for a project like that?

Mark honestly while I've done a lot of remodeling around the house and several wood working projects. I've never built a boat. I am building 3 boats in a month or so with my 8th grade math classes. Should be some good experiance. Most of my experiance comes from the surfboards I built and fixed in my days. From what I've gathered on the Bateau web site, the tools I'll need are a saw, jig and circular, an angle grinder, and a screw gun. From all the builds i've seen so far it doesn't take any high dollar equipment.
To make it very simple....you cut the frames out....lay the sides over the frame and zip tie them together. get it all situated and tab the panels together. Put some fiberglass down on the bottom. Get the bottom smooth, sand and paint the bottom. Then flip the boat fillet the joints with epoxy and a strengthening filler. Then glass the inside of the boat. Add stringers, foam to make it unsinkable, then put the deck/sole on. From there you outfit it as needed with console, lockers and what ever you need. I'm sure it will be a lot more time then that, but that's what I've gathered so far. I'm not a perfectionist, but will overbuild seams and the transome to make it a tough offshore boat. I got the 25S panga which has the higher sheer line.

The shop I have is a simple 30'x 30x metal building next to my house. I've got a shop smith and plenty of power tools that I've aquired over the years. I've always been a hands on kinda guy and liked making my own stuff.

Please post your progress and experiences with it, Bug. I've got access to the necessary stuff but am unsure about the most efficient use of my time and resources re: just buying a boat vs. jumping into a project like that, especially given limited construction experience. Thanks a bunch.
