The Democrats that have taken power in Washington D.C. this month largely due to the war in Iraq. They got there by criticizing the Bush Administration and capitalizing on the public's frustration with the lack of progress over the course of the last 4 years. They did not get there by offering any sort of alternative plan. They don't have one. All they have is the surrender option, which nobody wants. So what else is Nancy Pelosi going to do?
George W. Bush called her bluff...and she folded. We have just witnessed a rarity in American politics. A president with a 30-some-odd percent approval rating staring down a brand new, popularly elected Congress. Bush and his team correctly calculated that the American people will not tolerate any shorting of our troops when it comes to spending money, so the Democrats can't stop his surge.
Is Iraq a mess? No doubt, it is. The consequences of cutting and running at this time might be worse.
