I was invited on a 1.5 day Tuna fishing trip for this past Sat and Sun. We left San Diego early Sat morning and ran out to the Tuna grounds outside of Ensenada, Mexico.
We trolled for 3 hours and not one hookup, not one Tuna Beacon, not one paddy. So we headed for San Clemente Island.
On the backside of the island, about a mile out the water looked like Salt Creek/La Jolla, with poop mixed in. We headed straight out form the island and within 10 miles the visability went from 10 foot to easily 50 foot. We tested visiability by droping the anchor and measuring.
Now hold onto your shorts....Every kelp paddy we hit, were holding yellows. Biguns. But they would not bite. They would chase the bait fish and bolt away. The people that got bit were flylining little dead 3 inch chovies.
I brought my gps with me and saved all the numbers that we saw the yellows on. It probably won't do any good becasue the currents were fierce all day Sunday.
How can we calm these fish down for a shot? They were all over the place and acting crazy, like they were feeding but they didnt eat much at all.
Out of 24 anglers, we boated 7 fish. I (the king of the ocean), didnt even get a bite. But at least I threw up on 2 kids that got in the way of my internal projectiles. Then they both started puking. I felt like Lard Ass, getting his revenge. Both those kids got fish and laughed at me. Their Dad thought it was funny too.

Maybe when we pull up to a paddy, and just before we slip in the water, we should toss some chum out. Where can we get a bunch of dead chovies. Or we could use a bait tank? Im going to hange some dead choves from my speartip, maybe the yellows will just come take a look at my steel of death.

Talk to you all laters.

thatta boy, puking on the little ones... i have taught you well my young paddawon learner....lol. So the water was murk even at the islands huh? and no tuna biting at all? that doesn't sound good for my tuna trip next week outta san diego. Pass your info along to Steve from OCHunter, that way we can look for paddies when we head out on our trip in 3 weeks (if the water hasn't cleared up by then)

ps- when will you have time off to search for some paddies around here?
