What happened to middle ground?

Unfortunately politics has become so polarized that Republican means far right religious whacko and democrat means far left tree hugging commie pinko. I would guess 90% of us are moderate (either repub or democrat). If the politicians would stop pandering to the fringe elements of their constituency and get back to the majority of us the nation would not be so divided and they might be able to do something improbable, like govern.

I then to agree, but the parties themselves get wrapped up in what their own activists want and think. Those are the people who stay invovled and control the money. Rational middle of the roaders are too busy making a living or having a life to make a difference in the early stages of a campaign so we are usually left with the lesser of two evils choice in the end.

It's simple to shout & parrot simple-minded slogans.
