RED GROUPER ASSESSMENT

What happened in Atlanta?
This was the REVIEW of the Red Grouper stock assessment by independent scientific experts. This was the best SEDAR review so far (SEDAR is still a relatively new process and continues to positively evolve) and actually gives us great news:
THE RED GROUPER STOCK HAS PASSED THE POINT OF 'RECOVERED'!!

It is no longer over fished OR undergoing over fishing! What happened?
Release mortality (the percentage of undersize throwbacks that die) was more properly assigned than in past assessments. Commercial vertical line fishing was rated at 10 percent, while longline fishing was rated at a whopping 45%! Thatís half of everything thrown back compared to ten percent.

What do we want? Our five red grouper back. Seems that the stock recovered WITHOUT the help of the latest two rounds of regulation. These draconian reductions were unnecessary and quite costly to the state and the industry, as well as an infringement of our rights. I think we told NMFS exactly that two years ago. The assessment tells us that the stock is near an all time historical high, again, before the reduction in red grouper even took place.

What will it take to make them listen? Plan to attend the upcoming Grouper Forum. We want our grouper back and we want them back now.
