This is my first post, so Hello to all the other KIDS out there,I have to be a grown-up @ work so....Went for a little session today in south SC and though I bagged no treasures ,I sure had an unreal day.As my dive buddy said in the lobster post I have two extra fatty lobsters staked out, hopefully they don't decide to move to beverly hills!!!What he didn't mention was the 30+pound seabass? I came face to face with! freakin cool! All I can guess is that this was a giant seabass(can't be touched I know) but upon spotting him on a dive, I surfaced got a good breath and went to take a look at him,he was still there and as I came to his level he turned and actually came towards me just looking at me! He was almost close enough for me to touch with my polespear loaded and ready. Now as soon as I got to work I scoured the net for all the pictures of possible other fish that it might have been,It just didn't seem to be as black as the coloration shown on the Gov. sight. So if anyone has any idea what else it could possibly have been please inform a learning predator,I would appreciate it!!!
Also saw for the first time a very nice sized Halibut!!! Again unreal!! I spotted him and immediately had the 22" measure check going thru my head and he easily broke 30(used the front section of my spear jbl 2 piece travel to measure, thats 28")thoughts racing thru my head I realized I had the paralyzer tip on instead of the slip-tip.Now to someone who knows whats up I don't know if this would have mattered or not , but I didn't think there was any way I would be able to stone this thing let alone keep him with just the para-tip. So up i went, knowing that i had the slip-tip with me in the back-pack i had on(good way to keep fish while hunting, use the method when surf fishing from a surfboard) anyway switch out the tips couldn't find the Hali again, but it sure was cool seeing one finally!!!Could I have bagged that sucker w/ the paralyzer?????
All in all ,though I got no Booty I still came away from a good days diving with great memories !!!!
To those who know
1- what type of fish may the giant lunker have been,30+# and ?? grey green kind of spotty looking???
2-Paralyzer able to bag a legal size + halibut
3-there was a seal swimming in the area as well, do they pose any threat or is there anything to watch out for!
Granted the whiteys are hangin out at trail one but if thats the way your gonna go-*&%@ Whatta ya gonna do!!!!
Sorry for the long story but a newbie wanted to share.

It's about time! :D
So who's dinner party didn't get picked up 'cause you were on here doing the 2 fingered tango on the keyboard? ;)
What's your professional guess on the weight of our (I hope they end up OUR!) bugs?
Don't forget to bring home a BIG pot from work in about 3 weeks.....

Sounds just like a Black Sea Bass. I have seen them from light green to grey to black. The spots give them away.
You should have tried the spear, straight down and pin the flatty in the sand, then finish him off with your knife.
Sea Lions sometimes can pose a threat if your holding a free lunch for them, or Mr Whitey is stalking them. Just keep your eyes out.
How was the vis in SC? In Laguna it was 6-7 at best, even at 70'.
Did you guys boat dive or shore?

Talk to you later.

Hye bluegill,

welcome to the board...... as for the paralyzer tip, I prefer that tip on my polespear and have bagged halibut up to 30" no problem. The only thing you have to plan for is when you hit em you have to be in a position to drive the fish into the sand or reef to keep them from getting off. If you can do this then the paralyzer tip is great because of the wider surface area of the penetration. Good luck next time!
