I went out in Monterey Bay this weekend, just to test my gear and check my limits a little so I am comfortable, balanced and not pushing it too much.
I am going w/ the Peace boat out of Ventura on a 4 day trip out to the Cortez Banks.
It's my first semi-blue water trip and I am really excited about it. A trip just came back and everyone got yellows so I am really excited, we leave tuesday.
I dove for 2 1/2 hours in this small cove that was about 40-50 feet deep but all fish were at 25-35. It was great. I shot two kelp bass about 15" each, no big deal.
Then I went in had lunch and rested a little while. Got suited up again and went back out for another two hours or so. I drank about a half gallon of water throughout the morning up until my second dive but I was still a little dehydrated when I got out the second time.
I wasn't all that exhausted though so I think I am ready for the trip.
There was an otter who followed me around for about 1/2 an hour, it was the coolest thing that I have ever seen while I was in the water. It stayed about 5-8 feet away the whole time and it was so playful and animated, I thought it was really cool. I shot 5 more rock fish then called it a day.
I am really excited about my trip next week!!
