I am planning a 2 week vacation with the family in Wyoming for July. I know that it is highly probable that I will get shut down, considering it is a state park, but should I bring a polespear or small gun? Does anyone have info on taking fish, any species, by spear in Wyoming? I don't know if I can be away from my gear for that long. :(

There are lake trout in Yellowstone lake they have been trying to kill off for years now. There is a mandatory kill for all hook and line caught fish there, but I don't know if you can spear. Call the Park service or Wyoming Fish and Game. Let me know what you find out.

THANKS. It turns out, there is some legal spearing there. Just not 'bow and arrow'. I guess you have to be 'fully submerged' to qualify as a legal spearo.

I go to school in Iowa but spear in Wyo during my 3 week summer breaks. Im not sure where your going for your vacation but Id sure try and give you any helpful hits I can. Depending where you end up smallmouth bss, largemouth bass, pike, walleye, several trout species, catfish, perch, crappie, ling, and carp are all possible. Not many people spear in Wyo so info is kind of limited. The only law thats a bit odd has to do with the walleye limit being two for spearing as where hook and line its six. One also must check the regulations on for spearing in each regional drainage of the state for specific spearing laws that can e found online towards the back of the pdf fishing reg's page. I use a Riffe MT1 and its length works fine as an average. Sometimes a longer gun would be nice and othertimes even slightly shorter may benefit. You must also have a diver down flag within I 'think' 100feet of you spearing. I tow a life guard float with a flag mounted on top to a metal rod and it works great (I also attach my stringer to this so I dont have to deal with the fish connected to me). I have been using a 3mm suit but am getting a 5mm as a new one as most of the water may be 65-70 on the surface but it gets cold very very fast.

If you have any questions ask away.

Good hunting,
Justin

Where are you and the Family going???

The usual touristy spots. We are Californians reversing the tourist roles for a couple weeks. :D First, we are stopping in the tetons for a few days, then moving up into Yellowstone. Like I said, I don't know how much fishing is permitted within the parks. The DFG reg book doesn't do me much good since I'm not familiar with the lake names up there. Any suggestions?
