View Full Version : Spearfishing Season Over?

C'mon, are you kidding me? Yeah we've had a few rough weekends, and water is going to get colder, but no spearfishing until spring ?
This is the best time of the year to dive hands down. Colder water means less plankton which means consistently better inshore vis. Grouper, big ass sheepshead, mangos, and legal amberjack are stacked much closer to shore. The MG are absolutely lit up like a lanced boil on a fat trailer park whore's ass.
Get yourself a Helly Hansen "Perfect Storm" suit for the ride out & back, a Warmwind knee length parka for in between dives, a proper wetsuit for your cold tolerance, say a couple "arrrggh's" in a pirate voice, and get in the water.
I thought for a second I logged on to www.knitting/crochetboard.com. :D

I agree, and have already weighed in on this:
Personally, I am shooting every chance I get, even if water temp goes down to the high 40s. I have the eisenglass up in the boat, the 7/5 wetsuit w/ hood, and will experiment with things like filling coolers with HOT water. If I can get Financial Advis. to bring his massive 320, I'll climb in that like it's a spa!
Now, as far as Capt.Jay saying he is done for the year, we'll have to let him explain. :D

In about another month it will be cold enough to dust off the dry suit and give em hell.I just love it when those big G's get lethargic and let you swim right up to them and put one in their brain.:p

When I was commercial shootin full time, my season didn't even start until the 15th of December. The killer inshore shootin usually ended around Easter.

It's not over until we say it is!

Yea! and when the Germans tried to blame it on the Japs did we fall for that? Hell No. We stuck a spear in both of em cold or not.
I use a drysuit for caving but am thinking about trying it out hunting. I really need a good, cheap 5mm wetsuit. Anyone got any advise on brands.

this is only the first real "cold snap" of the year. It's gonna warm back up (a little) and the water temp will as well. Last year in Dec. it was in the low 70's, definitely still 2 piece 3 mil weather. Damn you guys are givin' up quick...SACK UP AND SHOOT TO KILL!!!!!!!:D

Get some more lead for that suit DT I would think about 8 to 10 lb might get it. Some one sells these hot pack to put in side your suit anyone here heard of this or know where to get them . I kow we used to get ones that stay dry to use hunting deer .

I have found that if you can keep the wind off you between dives you will stay much warmer. I have a full enclosure on my boat. I also use thinner suits and layer them. A vest with a hood is a great help. It also helps if you can change into a dry wet suit between dives. Winter is definetely best for grouper. We troll diving plugs between dives and pick up alot of fish.

I AGREE
The best time for slaying is definately in the winter. Less crowds (no crowd) and all the deep water grouper move closer in. It's hard to get out with our east coast weather, but when it calms for a day or two, its on.

That way too low, DT! Not worth it.

Hooray for South Florida! I haven't seen the water less than 70 degrees in years. The air gets colder than the water, but that's what that five gallon bucket of hot water is for...

Heck, over here on the east coast the coldest water is late in the full-blown summer when the labradore current (cold, no-vis freezing thermocline) comes in. It gets so cold on the bottom in the summer that I've seen dead lobsters that couldn't hack it. Imagine 50deg water after relaxing in the 90deg sun.
Most people around here wait for December-February all year long for fishing and diving, including me. Its just about to get exciting :) This is the time of year coming up where all the stuff you bought throughout the year allows a full return on your investment - then some.
