Mine is a 48" mahogany SEA HORNET made by J.T. Preece & Co. Sydney Austrailia. I don't see the S.S. name anywhere on it, but it sure does look like one.

Top end is a custom Ultimate bullpup Blue Water "rig gun" that takes a minimum 72" shaft length currently rigged with a 83" tip to butt 3/8" assy, 3/4" Riffe rubber custom bands and a riding rig.

Backup to that is an Ultimate Long Shot again rigged with Riffe bands but using a 60" 5/16 dia shaft.

I also have several "rig guns" custom built from JBL XHD triggers mounted on heavy wall AL or SST tubing with Bandito front ends. Bands are agin the heavy Riffe rubber. Gun tube length is trimmed to _JUST_ allow a slide ring to fit under the tip when mounted on a 60" shaft. None of my rig guns float, but most are near neutral with the shaft out. The drawback to these guns is that the trigger design increases trigger pull proportional with band tension.

The Ultimate trigger is easy to release at ANY band tension that won't shear the pins, but regretably is no longer manufactured.

There are also a couple of "baby rigs" cut back to take a 48" shaft for use off the Fl panhandle.

I bought it from the maufacturer in the Lantana/Boynton area in about '92. A buddy and I were "unofficial reps" showing the gun over here as a JBL/Bandito hybrid rig gun alternative. He manufactured just 2 of the overlength guns for Matt and me. Matt has since moved to the FL panhandle and retired his big gun except for trips back here for some serious hunting. He replaced it with a Riffe bullpup. Matt plans on creating a shorter hybrid woodie sized to use a standard Riffe shaft with the Ultimate bullpup trigger group off the rig gun, while still allowing the trigger group to be dropped back into the ultimate body for rig hunts.

BTW the powerhead they developed is the slickest thing since sliced bread. Cheap, disposable, reliable, easy to use, and still allowed the use of a standard slip or winged tip. I've tested them in sizes ranging from 9mm to .444 Marlin. The .444 is reported to have taken the head clear off a large hammerhead, and deafened the diver for a couple days. I have a few left in 9mm and .357, as well as the specifications to make my own if it ever becomes necessary.

The Ultimate story is a sad one. They made excellent products at a great price, but the company was killed financially by a family member's bad habit.

I've got a JBL Sawed-Off Magnum that I had a third band added to and and had all the bands upgraded to a larger size. I also just added a .223 powerhead.

I also carry a custom polespear with me. It is a telesoptic(sp) pole that I brazed a 5 prong frog gigger on. It is about 5' extended & retracts to just less than 2' and I clip it on my side to deal with the run of flounder & sheephead that come in the spring.

Riffe Competitor 3XS and a JBL 6' polespear.

Update: I was planning on getting #1 (10yr old son) a Compeititor #1, but decided there was no point in a #1 if he could reach the bands on a #2. So after trying a friend of mines Riffe Competitor #2X he now is the proud owner of a brand new customized Competitor #2. The customization part is he could reach the bands, but couldn't cock it by himself, so I made him three 1/2X20" bands. That didn't work either, so I made him three 1/2x26" bands. That will get him started. As he gets stronger and gets his technique down I can give him more power by shortening the bands or make him new shorter ones.:D

All you triggerfish out there better look out, here he comes!!!:D

Sask here,

i use a Riffe MT3 with enclosed track, reel (1,000 lb. test) and floater wing kit. however, when i was meeting with jay and julie (riffe) they were making a larger wing kit for the Mt's with the reel.. the other was much smaller (the picture with julie and her 42lb white sea bass)... the newer one is about double the size but the gun is still negative. the only other upgrade i need to do is the aluminum muzzle with the extra bands and icepick tip.

Use 2 bands that are 5/8 diameter and 18" long. I tried that 270-300% length fromula. I shot at a nice gag and the shaft dropped a foot in front of his nose and skedded under his chin. Before the next dive i cut the two bands down. next dive i tried a 4lb. sheepshead (tank) at the same distance and he was history. moral of the story is stick with what works for you.!!!

If you stretch you bands past the recovery point they grow. So you start with a nice new band that is perfect at 300% then after a couple minutes its only at 270% because you break the fibers so how small you cut your band depends on how nice the rubber you buy is. Cheaper bands cant handle the 300% elongation that the expensive material can.

My original gun: a 50" teak Riffe Hawaiian mid-handle gun armed with a 57" Hawaiian shaft powered by three 5/8" x 24" Riffe bands. This is my “East Coast” gun which has an outer range (gun butt to spear tip) of 24'. This gun has proven itself time and again as an accurate, hard hitting, long range gun. It is the gun that I started spearfishing with, and I have absolutely no complaints other than it takes time to reload. This is not a problem on the East coast as I usually don’t shoot much more than a couple times a dive.

My new gun: a custom 52" Spearfishing Specialties custom teak Commercial gun. Custom because Kevin built it with a Biller handle and trigger that incorporates the Biller line drop system. The gun, with its spare shaft holder, is two guns in one: a standard Commercial gun as well as a gun that accommodates the the Spearfishing Specialties EZ load line system that is integral to the Classic line of guns. In either configuration, the gun’s bands power a 60" stinger single barb lineshaft that can be converted to a freeshaft simply by disconnecting the line clip. This gun has an outer range (measured from butt to speartip) of 21" rigged with the EZ load system and 16.5" rigged with the Commercial system. It is presently my “West Coast” gun, but I am open minded (and optimistic) that it will work itself into the starting line up for the East Coast as well. If I become a freeshaft convert, it may become my only gun.

I'm sure that I will have fun figuring it all out. :)

Anyway, after trying a Hawaiian shaft on my Riffe Competitor #3XS, effectively making a #3X, for the reef hunting we are doing and finding it more effective, #1's Competitor #2S now has a Hawaiian shaft on it, effectively making it a #2. Biller 42, but I'm just now thinking about getting back to spearfishing. I haven't shot anything since May 2000.
BTW, Thanks to Seaweed27 for showing me the way back to spearfishing!! I'll be diving more as a result.

Mares Califorian pneumatic. About 3' long. Works good on the rigs in the gulf. Seems to be easier to reload than a band gun but I've never used a band gun.

Still have a 48 Biller. Still waiting for the water to get warm around here. I did some mods, thanks to the help from this board. I think the shaft I bought is 60" and I also bought some Blue bands, I forget what size. All this talk about guns makes me want to get something bad assed. I probably only pull the trigger once or twice a day, so something super powerful with a super long range for the spooky groupers we have around Stuart would be the ticket. Any suggestions?

Update: Just returned from a business trip to find that the new Riffe Metal Tech #1 has come in. This one is going to be my night gun. I was going to order the aluminum muzzle and enclosed track at the same time, but the FFO (family financial officer) balked at the extra ~$100, was still able to get her to go for the gun so those will get added later.

Right now I have a 120CM Rob Allen that is double banded and shoots 7 mm shafts. I am going to try and get some 7mm and 8mm spring stainless steel shafts custom made for this gun. Hopefully I can buy a custom 52" titanium Daryl Wong hybrid type gun or have someone make one for me soon.

Riffe makes some fine guns but I am too cheap and stupid to own one (yet). I shoot a JBL 450 XHD with three 28 inch bands, detachable tip and a riding rig. My stupid spearo trick is to lose track of my gun during a close encounter of the amberjack kind. Normally, I give the gun a toss over my shoulder, stabbing my hand through the bands, securing the gun around my upper arm. But..... sometimes I miss and just let the damn thing float to the surface and look for it when I reach the boat(sometimes my buddies doing their surface interval will see it and swim for it). Thanks God!!! I love rig diving!
