I was mulling over the idea of a draft earlier while trenching for sprinkler lines and I came up with an idea. If a congress(wo)man thinks that a situation is so dire that forced conscription and bloodshed is the answer, then why don't we make it so that any congress(wo)man who votes in favor of a draft plus any healthy individuals out of their family get drafted for the vanguard unit.

Obviously we would be in need of bodies and they obviously think the same way, so why not make them put their money where their mouth is? They would vote for a draft in a heartbeat because they would have no stake in it since they won't be getting drafted and any draft age kids that they have could easily find themselves in the [insert state here, eg. Texas] Air National Guard, protecting the skies of [state] from the [insert enemy here, eg. VietCong] threat.

Heinlein suggested something along these lines back in the 1930's. Only not just congress, he proposed that going to war might require a national vote & here's the catch:

If you vote for it, or by abstaining & don't actually vote against it, then you support it, want it & are volunteering for the duration, period. Regardless of your age or physical condition, you will serve in some capacity not of your choosing until it's over.

Might not be a bad idea.
