That will be 23" after its fillet. KingNeptune is my dive buddy. He's been on me for the last couple of weeks to change jobs and get weekends off so we can dive. That will happen sometime after our San Benitos trip. I cant quit right now because of my medical benifits. I will be having a septoplasty and some of my sinuses removed the week after I get back from San Benitos and my insurance will cover it. After that its by-by!! KingNeptune knows Im pulling his chain. I just tease him because within the last month I think he's spent more time on the weekends thinking and talking about diving than he does his girlfriend. Lets see, the Saturday at Wallins, the Sunday after, the Sunday after that, the Sunday after that Sunday, Saturday at the kayak seminar, and the Sunday after that!!! Geez KingNeptune, you definately got the dive bug!!!

New to posting on Spearboard, but I've been lurking for a while now. I'll be in Monterey this weekend, August 4th-5th. Working with an Open Water class in the mornings, free in the afternoons. Looking for some good fishing in/around Monterey/Carmel area. If you need a buddy, Let me know! I'd love to learn some tricks from the local guys.

Oh, about me? I'm 26, a divemaster at a Dive/Freedive/Snowboard/Wakeboard shop near Sacramento (Vacaville). I've been Freediving for about 15 years now on and off, and Scuba certified for 6. I'm on my second Zodiac now, but she still needs some TLC and cosmetic repair... (damn bastids are a pain to fix!) I'll fish with tanks or snorkel, depending on the fish and/or conditions. Just looking to meet some new folks that are into putting food on the barbie/table/freezer as I do. Hi, I'm over in the Bay Area [Fremont]

I've never spearfished but remembered watching people do it and thinking it looked like fun. I used to SCUBA dive but that was about 15 years ago. I just got back from Hawaii where I spent a lot of time snorkeling. I forgot how much I loved the water. I don't have much interest in getting back into SCUBA, but I think I'd like to try spearfishing while freediving.

That said, I bought a bunch of used stuff - and would like to head out to Monterey Bay soon. I have some questions...

-Do the Tritons go out every weekend?
-Do they take novices along? Like I said, I bought some used stuff so hopefully there is no need to borrow stuff. The wetsuit is a 6-5-4 mm, I'm assuming that means 6mm chest, 5mm leg, and 4mm arms? Is that warm enough - It comes with a hood, but I've got another 3mm hood I can use as well.
-Do people spearfish in Monterey year around? I've read the water temperature there is pretty constant, so I figured it might be a year-around activity, but wanted to ask.
-The used speargun is a 26" Bandito I think. The shaft seems OK, but the tip is rusted very badly. I tried to remove it by unscrewing it, but can't get it off. Are they welded on? Would it be OK for my first trip out or do I need to buy a new shaft w/ tip?
-Any general pointers for a spearo newbie? Any must-read books/articles/URLs before heading out?
-At the risk of branding myself as a wimp - I've gotta ask. What about sharks? Anybody worry about them and/or use a SharkShield?

I'm new to freediving an I met U/C Spearo in Aqua Sports.
He pointed me this way. I live in Los Gatos.

I now have a grand total of four dives under my belt.
Three at or near Fort Ross and one today for exercise/ breath training at Sea Cliff State Beach. Does any body know if it is safe/legal/productive to go poke around by the Cement Boat?

I'm excited to see all the folks in the area. Let me know if anyone wants to dive, I'm usually open most weekdays. I've been feeling out the sport with a couple of buddies that have more experience with scuba.

I'm pretty setup for gear but if anybody has an inexpensive gun or size 10 1/2 freediving fins let me know.
Currently I use a pole spear an some pretty small scuba fins.

They aren't quite longfins, but I have a pair of brand new, never used Mares Volo Race size 44-45 (9.5-10.5) I'm trying to get rid of. That would get you some more speed without going to a full longfin yet. And for the price, you might find them retail for $90, but I'll ship them to you for $60.
